Welcome to Moxie and Oliver's Etsy shop! My work is an incorporation of traditional leather techniques, and some of my own modern twists. The leather that I use is a thick, tooling, leather. It is stiff on the first wear but softens up nicely. The thickness and strength of the leather means that, unlike most leather accessories, it will last a lifetime. My products are meant to be fashionable, but not "trendy", so if you're in the market to purchase a belt, wallet, purse, or another item that you would like to be able to use for the next ten to fifty years, you've come to the right place.
My sizing info and answers to many questions can now be found in my Policy section.

Handmade & Custom Leather Goods
I started Moxie and Oliver in 2004 when I was working as a paralegal at a law firm. Always one to push the limits of what is possible, I kept being called into my supervisor's office on dress code violations. I needed a leather belt that would be durable, but also one that refelected my unique style. So, I reached back into my childhood experience tooling leather in the Rockies during family reunions, and I made one.
The rest, of course, is history. The first belt turned into a line of belts, and since I was unable to find a good, sturdy, messenger bag I decided to make one of those as well (and I'm glad to say, the original one I made is still in use and holding up splendidly!).
Today my line includes whatever you can dream up in leather. I'm always happy to do custom orders, too - just ask!

I'm the proud mom of now TWO little munchkins - one who is my studio assistant. or at least companion - two cats, and two dogs. We live in the suburbs of Seattle and when I'm not making leather goods, I'm running after kids, painting, or gardening.

SIZING
Anything in my shop that comes in sizes will be made to order (this mostly includes belts and watches) and the very best way to get the very best fit is to provide me with your exact measurement when ordering, or shortly thereafter.
WATCH MEASUREMENTS: I need your tight wrist measurement, so please make sure that whatever method you use, it's snug, and don't add anything to it (please!!). The best method is to use a cloth tape measure, like a seamstress would use. If you cannot find one, the next best thing is to grab a friend and a strip of paper and a ruler. Wrap the paper tightly around your wrist, and mark where the paper meets. Measure this distance, and that should be your tight wrist measurement.
BELT MEASUREMENTS: You can measure your hips/waist with a cloth tape measure where you wear your jeans. That's the best way, or you can measure a belt (using a tape measure, or cloth tape measure) from the end of the belt to the hole you currently use. This is not such an exact science, because there are seven holes in the belts, spaced 1" apart. I will put your measurement on the middle hole, so if you've made a mistake in measuring, there are still six other holes to choose from.
If you're buying a belt for a gift, or have no tape measures, you can choose from standard sizes (below) or contact me with the recipient's pant size:
XS: Smallest hole at 27", largest at 33"
S: Smallest hole at 29", largest at 35"
M: Smallest hole at 31", largest at 37"
L: Smallest hole at 33", largest at 39"
XL: Smallest hole at 35", largest at 41"
Smaller and larger sizes also available.

Returns and exchange details
I lovingly make every item to order, and do my best to quality check each piece before it leaves my studio. Sometimes, however, I do miss something. If you receive a piece that is defective or if there is a mistake in a custom piece, please contact me within twenty-four hours so that I can arrange to repair or replace it. If there is a clear error in your piece (eg., you asked for initials ABC and received XYZ) I will pay for your return shipping costs (please email me to get a return label). If you are requesting an alteration to a piece that was made as specified in the listing (eg., you ordered an antique black piece but would like us to remove some of the color) you are responsible for return shipping.
Due to the individual nature of my business, I request that you carefully make your purchasing decisions. I want you to be happy with your purchase, and to get something that you will be happy with for years to come. I do my best to list all information that I find pertinent in my listings, but if you need additional information about a product in order to make your buying decision I am happy to answer any questions that you have. Please remember that unless the item is damaged or incorrect, all sales are final (damaged/incorrect items will be repaired or replaced at no charge). Regretfully, I cannot accept returns or exchanges for a change of mind or a change of heart.
And, also, since we make everything by hand and try to start on it as soon as your order comes through orders cannot be cancelled once placed. We will try to accommodate changes/additions if possible (sometimes we're far enough along in the process that no changes can be made).
PLEASE NOTE: ALL OF OUR ITEMS ARE DYED BY HAND and LEATHER IS A NATURAL MATERIAL. We use vegetable tanned leather because it allows us to permanently add color and pattern and it is easier on the environment than commercial garment leathers. However, since each piece is DYED BY HAND and every cow is different, the colors may look different on your piece than on the one in the listing. This is what makes your piece UNIQUE and BEAUTIFUL and how you know it is HANDMADE! If you have questions about this - shoot me a convo! I'm happy to answer any questions or address any concerns.
Payment
I do require pre-payment in full on all custom orders. I ask that you please make sure that the description in your custom listing is correct prior to purchasing. In the event that you need to make a change in your order (pattern, colors, etc.) please contact me as soon as possible and I will do my best to accommodate.
Nearly all my items are made to order and I make every effort to start on your purchase as soon as your order comes through. Because of the custom nature of your purchase, orders, custom and non custom, cannot be cancelled once they are placed.
Sales tax charged to all purchases shipped to Washington State.
NON US ORDERS: You probably will be charged customs/duties when your item arrives. This is like paying tax on a purchase you make in person and it is not included int he item price or shipping cost. Each country handles these charges differently so if you are unfamiliar with it I recommend checking the import laws in your country.
Shipping
I ship USPS First Class for items under 13oz, Priority for items up to 2lbs (or that fit in a flat-rate box), and USPS Parcel Post for items heavier than 2lbs, or larger than a flat-rate box. I ship internationally by USPS as well, using First Class for small items, Priority flat-rate boxes for small purses, and Parcel Post for larger items. I do not automatically insure shipments under $150. I will insure shipments automatically where the purchase price of the merchandise only (not including shipping or tax) is $150 or more, or if the item is a purse or messenger bag. If you would like to purchase insurance, please contact me so that I can calculate the cost with insurance of shipping your parcel.
International insured parcels start at $25 and go up from there. The post office only offers insurance on priority parcels, which is why they are so expensive to ship (but they get to you faster!).
I cannot be responsible for lost, damaged, or stolen items should you choose not to insure it. Please be aware that shipping timeframes are estimates and packages may be delayed in transit. No refunds will be given for delayed shipments.

REGISTRY
Have a special day coming up? I am more than happy to create a registry for you with everything on your M&O wishlist. Just send me a convo to get started.
WHOLESALE/CONSIGNMENT
I am currently accepting a very limited number of wholesale accounts. Please contact caitlin [!at] moxieandoliver.com for information, or you can see my work on wholesale.etsy.com. I do not accept consignment accounts.
VEGAN ALTERNATIVE/ ENVIRO CONCERNS
I've been asked a few times, but unfortunately I cannot do a vegan version of any of my wares. Due to the process that I use, vinyl or a synthetic product would not hold up.
I do assure you that, for those of you who have environmental concerns, I use eco-friendly dyes and paints in my work. My goal is to provide pieces that will hold up for use and abuse as well, so that they do not have to be thrown away in a few years (or months... I'm really hard on my bags!). I would rather have you purchase one bag from me and never need to replace it - it saves materials and space in the landfill, and it also saves you money!

Frequently asked questions
How do I personalize the inscription on this piece?
It's easy! Just add the existing listing to your cart and in the cart you will see something that says "notes to moxieandoliver." Leave the inscription that you would like in the "notes" box, exactly as you would like it to appear on your piece and I will customize it for you.
What kind of leather do you use?
All of my pieces use premium grade vegetable tanned leather (or "Veg-tan"). Vegetable tanning uses botanical products (such as tree bark) to turn the material from hide to leather. It is one of the older tanning methods and takes about a month to complete the process. Because natural materials are involved, it is a much more eco-friendly process than chromium tanning (or "chrome tan" which is what most clothing, handbags and accessories are made from).
Vegetable tanned leather does require a little bit of breaking in, and the best way to do this is just use the piece! Movement of the leather and the oils from your skin will start to soften it immediately. Once you've experienced a Moxie & Oliver piece you'll be hooked!
