HEY, THANKS DAD!
Dad had a lot of artistic talent. The Disney Company invited him to work for them, but being loyal to the family business, he declined. Sometimes he'd draw for me. I was captivated by what came out of the end of his pencil.
By the time I was nine, I had set up my first studio in a corner of my bedroom. I had a card table, a box of Prang watercolors, a couple of baby food jars for water and the comics. I loved painting Archie and Veronica. One of the most influential events came when a young woman in our neighborhood, for whom I babysat, invited me to art classes she was giving in her garage. She drew with techniques I had never seen.
I enrolled at the University of Washington in Seattle at 18 and began my formal art training. The easels, the smell of the oil paint, the charcoal dust on the floor, the huge pieces of paper were captivating. But I fell in love at 19 and blithely dashed into life with Bill Givens. It was seven years before our first child was born and I loved being a mommy. When our son was born and had reached his 10th birthday, I returned to university life to finish my art degree. I graduated with honors at 42.
Still at it, I have discovered I don't have one particular style, but many. Enjoy the artistic expressions of the world I live in. Buy several pieces -- start a collection of my work. It is affordable and full of energy.
