About

Stitching together past, present and future

My grandmothers and my aunt made things by hand. Each winter my grandmother would make a quilt from bits and pieces of worn out clothing and scraps of material. She would tell me what each little piece was in its former life. Maybe it was a dress she made for my mother or perhaps it was a handmade curtain. She saved all of the buttons from the garments she re-purposed and I loved looking through the big tins of them.

My other grandmother and I spent our time together making crafts too. She loved doing plastic canvas needlepoint and we made Christmas ornaments and tissue box covers. I would go through her craft supply stash and look at the skeins of yarn and the little containers full of glitter, sequins and beads. I loved all of the colors and textures and was fascinated with how the items could be transformed into something else.

I spent many summer days with my grandmother and aunt. They sat on the porch chatting for hours and my aunt knitted all the while. One day when I was about nine-years-old, I asked my aunt to show me how to knit. I was soon on my way to making my first scarf. It was a garish variegated green and I remember it as being much too short to be functional; nonetheless, I proudly gifted it to my mom.

Thus began my love for all things handcrafted. A few years ago, I picked up my knitting needles again and I haven’t stopped knitting since. I get so much more out of knitting than I would have imagined. It connects me to all the crafty women in my past and I think of them each time I pick up my needles. Knitting also allows me to feel capable in the present. I get tremendous satisfaction from seeing a friend or family member in one of my hats or scarves and hearing from happy customers. I look forward to seeing where knitting takes me next. Knitting is past, present and future for me.

I still love all the colors and textures of yarn as much as I did as a kid. I love imagining what the yarn might become and then bringing that vision to life with my hands. I hope you enjoy my creations!
