Frequently asked questions

How long is your processing time?

Once you place an order with us, we’ll get it shipped out to you in 1-2 business days.

Are your shipping materials low-waste?

Yes! We’re committed to packing our orders with materials that are biodegradable, 100% recycled, and plastic-free. Occasionally, a package may contain plastic bubble wrap, but rest assured, we would never purchase new plastic materials, and we are simply reusing clean pieces that we have unavoidably received in shipments. We try to make sure this doesn’t happen, as we all know the feeling when you open a box, expecting wonderful eco-friendliness, and there’s some bubble wrap in there. But did you know that only 9% of plastic is actually recycled? Terrifying. We’re determined to reuse what we can, and we hope you do too.

Why don’t you ship internationally?

We do ship to Canada, but that's as far as we go. We believe, in the same spirit that Greta Thunberg stopped traveling by plane, that it’s most sustainable for our shop to only operate domestically. This is not necessarily an America-first ideology, but simply an attempt to lower our carbon footprint as a company and help our customers achieve the same small(er) footprint.

Are your products in any brick-and-mortar shops?

We’re working on it! Check back for a list of stockists.

Actually, our goal is to open our own brick and mortar in the Chicagoland area where we’ll sell our creations as well as other artisans’ work like we do at in-person markets. It’s a dream of ours to have a cozy, community-oriented mercantile shop of sustainable artisan goods. By supporting our shop, you can help us get there!

Where’d the name Mud City come from?

Mud City is Chicago’s oldest nickname, used way before the Windy City and Chi-Town. The reasoning behind it is that Chicago was built upon a wetland called a mudflat.

We wanted to honor our city by calling back to its origins.

By doing that, we are also conscious of the land itself. This means raising our own and others’ awareness about the Indigenous people who were forcibly removed from the land in the 1830s, as well as the present-day concerns over how the swampy terrain will fare amidst the threat of climate change.

We hope if you’re from Chicago, you’ll join us in this cognizance, and if you’re not, you’ll feel the call to learn about your own hometown’s past, present, and future.

Jewelry question: are your ear wires okay for those of us with sensitive ears?

While we don’t label our earrings as hypoallergenic, we only ever use ear wires that are hand-forged with high-quality brass, copper, or sterling silver. Jewelry makers know that it can be super easy to find ear wires sold in large quantities for cheap prices. We’re not about that. We pay extra to get quality materials for everything we make, because we respect our customers, the planet, our work, and the craft. It’s a win-win kind of situation, because our customers come back to tell us that our earrings don’t bother their ears, even when that’s an anomaly for them! We’re proud of that :)

Are your earrings heavy?

All of our earrings are designed to be lightweight, because we know how frustrating heavy earrings are. Like the stilettos of jewelry, they’re just a pain! Even the earrings in our shop that look heavy and substantial are relatively lightweight. Of course, some are more than others, but we can promise you, you can wear them all without complaint. And don’t just take it from us… you can read other customers’ testimonials about this very subject in our reviews.

Will I receive the pair of earrings in the photo?

Sometimes! With some designs, Mindy upcycles vintage beads or uses unique pieces, so only one pair can be made, and you will receive the very pair in the photos. Often, Mindy remakes popular designs and relists the earrings with the original photos. In those cases, we are conscientious to make sure that they match how they look in the photos. Some beads have minor variations or patina aged charms look more speckled than others. When that happens, we take new photos before relisting the earrings. We are very careful about this so customers receive what they are expecting. But again, sometimes a pair of earrings will look slightly different (slightly, not very, don’t worry). We think this is all part of what makes each pair special! ♡
