About MulberryWhisper

Sales 2,418
On Etsy since 2012

Our Very Own Small Boutique

After USSR ceased to exist, I stopped working at a clothing factory, because they did not produce clothing any more and did not pay salary. Instead, I worked on custom orders.

Now I stay at home, looking after my younger daughter and granddaughter. I could not find a job locally which would be both interesting and demanding and would pay at least at a satisfactory level, but it would be too boring not to work. Besides that, my government pension is too small, and, although my children are always ready to support me, I prefer to earn my living myself.

We were thinking of opening a brick and mortar clothing store here in the city but then decided it would not pay; there would be way too much cost and trouble. And then my daughter Eugenie thought of Etsy which we already knew and loved; we decided to give it a try, and now we are here.

I do what I know and love: make clothing, accessories and home textiles of beautiful local fabrics. It is good to have access to this wealth of supplies, including ethnic ikat silks, both contemporary and vintage, and to possess a sound knowledge of design strengthened by many years of practice at a big industrial enterprise. This allows me producing beautiful and quite unique items, high in quality and ideally suited to meet your demands. We use a lot of vintage fabrics and rugs, which means that many of our items are one of a kind, and, in addition to that, they are ethical: we do not put additional pressure on natural resources when we use vintage supplies. We also reclaim and upcycle.

We really love it here. We keep improving our store, working on the pictures and descriptions, adding more items and trying to find out what people would like to see there. We are very grateful to all of you for your support and hope to be able to make something really nice for you - something to use and love, for handmade items do have a piece of soul of their makers. And we love what we do.

Everything we do is either unique or very limited in quantity, and you will never see 'your' pillow cases in someone else's house; similarly, no one else will be wearing 'your' tunic, dress or jacket. When we produce clothing to order, we always create individual patterns to ensure impeccable fit.

We only sell authentic Russian shawls and Russian scarves. In most cases. we can tell you about history of our Russian shawl, about its age and the artist.

We gladly take custom orders for Uzbek silk dresses, blouses, tops and shirts, as well as for pillow covers and shams. All items in the shop are produced by a professional designer who comes from a family of designers.

Sincerely, Irina and Eugenie

PS We now have a vintage shop, too - http://www.etsy.com/shop/MulberryTerrace - welcome!

Additional policies and FAQs
Silk ikat fabric should be dry cleaned. Crepe de chine and silk chiffon can be hand washed cold.

Occasionally you can see some irregularities in the silk fabric, such as slubs or uneven dye. We feel that they provide extra character to the items and do not mind. However, if you do mind, these items might not be for you. Please bear in mind that these are handmade fabrics, and they are produced in Uzbekistan in a rather primitive way.

Same is true about vintage Russian scarves and shawls and the items we make from them. They can bear signs of age which make them even more dear to us, and we make our best to identify and describe any issues. When describing my vintage shawls, I often indicate that they have small holes (mostly pinholes) made by moth. I often enclose photos as well. While you might think it strange that too many of my shawls are damaged, in reality most of vintage wool shawls will have some moth damage. It is just that most people do not know how to look for that. I myself often buy vintage shawls online, where condition is described as perfect, and find moth bites. So, my shawls are not 'more damaged' than average; I am more accurate in examining and describing than an average seller.

Some of my vintage shawls can have a slight scent of mothballs or some other scents from their previous homes. I air and iron them but do not wash or dry clean. I also cannot guarantee that they come from pet and smoke free environment. When shawls are stored in my house, I put some essential oils into that chest, to ward off the moth, so they can acquire a light scent of lavender and clove.

We often find items in perfect vintage condition, but if you want a guaranteed impeccable condition please refer to the authorised dealer in Russia - it is the safest way. Etsy and Ebay are full of fake Russian shawls now. Not only they look miserable, but also the fabric is not wool.

Russian shawls can be damaged by washing so dry clean is the safest way. It is good to air them on the line now and then, especially when it is dry and cold. They look instantly refreshed. There is a set of simple maintenance rules which you can see here - http://www.mulberrywhisper.com/2015/01/how-to-care-for-your-russian-shawl.html

We believe in recycling and reusing. In most cases, items will be packed in a very simple manner, using recycled materials. If you want gift wrapping and/or a gift card, please indicate that in the note when buying.

We have pets at home, they are not allowed near the shop inventory, but we are not a pet free family. Besides, we usually know little about history of items we buy. They can come from homes with pets, too.

We do not smoke, but sometimes vintage fabrics might have traces of scents from storing, such as a faint scent of mothballs, cedar or lavender. Please remember they do not come from a factory. A bit of airing helps.

We gladly reserve items for several days.

Please also see the vintage shop run by our relative in Wisconsin - http://www.etsy.com/shop/MulberryTerrace - some very nice finds there.
