Muse Glass

Inspired by organic elements and modern form, I make what I like: easy to wear minimalist pieces, the unexpected pairing of saturated color with rustic copper, eye catching statement/cocktail rings and natural delicacies like my snakeskin, lichen and gold feather series.

I first began working with glass at a local stained glass production studio in 1999. There I learned traditional Tiffany stained glass techniques and eventually became a lighting designer. After leaving the studio and branching off on my own, I studied metalsmithing and began focusing more on jewelry design. In addition to the one of a kind and made to order pieces available in my Etsy shop, I created a collection of stained glass/recycled glass jewelry that has been represented by over 100 shops and galleries across the country including the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts here in Richmond.

Additional policies and FAQs
*Please note that I cannot accept returns of made to order jewelry based on incompatibility so choose your metals thoughtfully.

Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc with a bright yellowish tone. Bronze is an alloy of copper and tin with a lightly blushed golden tone, similar to 10k or 14k gold. Bronze is a stronger metal than brass and yields more durable pieces. Both brass and bronze are great, less expensive alternatives to gold provided your body chemistry is compatible. Those with more acidic leaning skin types or metal sensitivities may experience skin discoloration or accelerated tarnishing due to the copper content. Skin discoloration, if an issue, can be resolved by applying a layer of clear nail polish to just the part of the jewelry that contacts the skin (i.e. the inside of a ring band). I wear my brass/bronze rings 24/7 while working, showering, sleeping, etc. without issue for the most part. All they've needed is a quick polish from time to time. On occasion I have had some minor discoloration when I've either worn a wide band or overly tight ring (doesn't allow skin to breathe as well) or in humid/moist conditions. Copper is a pure metal, not an alloy, with a warm pinkish tone in its natural state and a deep, rustic reddish tone with heat treatment. Inherently a soft metal, I forge all of my copper jewelry which gives it strength. I also oxidize copper pieces using heat patina which naturally adds a little protection against the skin. I love that raw metals like these can have an heirloom quality lifespan with proper care and always be refreshed with a polishing cloth or allowed to age/oxidize naturally.

While visually so similar that it is hard to tell them apart, 10k and 14k yellow gold have some differences that may make you wish to choose one over the other. 10k gold contains approx. 41% pure gold and 14k gold contains approx. 58% pure gold. Both are alloyed with other metals, primarily silver, some copper and small amounts of other metals. Since pure gold is a very soft metal, the more it is alloyed with other metals the stronger it becomes; therefore, jewelry made from 10k is more durable than 14k. People with metal allergies tend to do better with 14k as it has less added metals and more gold content. Both 10k and 14k hold their shine well and, like most metals, benefit from occasional polishing.

Although non-precious metals are most susceptible, almost all metals can be prone to tarnishing without proper care, even gold. Wearing your metal jewelry regularly is one of the best ways to reduce tarnishing. To minimize tarnishing when not in use, store jewelry out of the open air (i.e. in a ziplock bag or other sealed container). Occasional polishing with a jewelry polishing cloth is recommended for all metal jewelry (precious and non-precious). Avoid wearing your jewelry in chlorinated or salt water, both are corrosive to metals. If exposed to either, wash your piece as soon as possible in fresh water, rinse well and dry off.

Silver soldered glass jewelry can be refreshed using a Sunshine polishing cloth (available in my shop). Gunmetal soldered glass jewelry has been sealed with an acrylic coat to preserve the patina and does not need polishing. Glass jewelry with encased elements (i.e. moss, lichen, feathers, etc.) is not waterproof and should not be worn while bathing or swimming. It's a good idea to store glass jewelry separately from other jewelry as it can be easily scratched.

If you don't know your ring size, I strongly recommend being professionally sized at a local jewelry store (it's quick and free and will yield the most accurate results). If needed, resizing for rings is available in most cases for a fee (see specific listings for details) plus shipping costs. Resized rings are typically ready to reship approx. 1 week after I have received the return. *Please contact me via Etsy prior to returning any jewelry for resizing.

I'm sorry, my shop does not offer engraving services at this time. However, many jewelry stores do so that's likely something you could have done locally if interested.
