Vintage maps printed on modern textiles....
One night in 2010 I woke Neil up at 4am exclaiming: "Wouldn't it be good to put maps on cushions?!!! Men would like them too and there are no home wares for men!" he muttered something like "great idea babe", (code for if I just agree I get to go back to sleep) but I couldn't get back to sleep! I just had to work out how to do it! Several months passed, a lot of prototypes were made, a lot of blood sweat and tears and then we had cushions with maps on them!
We have been incredible lucky in that our wares were featured on some big blogs and in some great magazines quite early on. This meant we were forced to see it as a business, rather than a hobby quite quickly.
I think we work really well together -as long as Neil agrees with all my ideas- ha!! Neil does a lot of behind the scenes stuff like book work, (my eyes glaze over with anything involving accounting) post office trips, cutting fabric and packing orders. He also works as a Chef and most importantly is a very hands on Dad to our 2 young girls. He leaves all the design-y ideas stuff to me. I think I initially underestimated how much admin is involved in running a business and Neil is great with putting systems in place for this. We were thrilled to be featured sellers https://blog.etsy.com/en/featured-seller-my-bearded-pigeon/
We live in the forest amongst the trees, we collect all our own water, we have solar power, a composting toilet, we grow a lot of our food. We try to tread lightly on the earth so it is important to us that our business is eco friendly. We use certified organic cotton whenever we can, and packaging is kept to an absolute minimum. You can see and read more about how we live here: http://www.etsy.com/blog/en/2011/get-the-look-decor-its-easy-being-green/
We donate on a regular basis to Kiva.org and the Asylum Seekers Resource Centre, based in Australia. Cath was also thrilled to have been a mentor in the Etsy Creative Courage Challenge with Etsy Australia in September/ Oct 2015. https://www.etsy.com/creativecourage Open Up Etsy in November 2016 and Etsy Resolution in 2017.
Cath was part of the 2016 Etsy Sellers Advisory Board https://www.etsy.com/seller-handbook/article/introducing-etsys-2016-seller-advisory/37704589529
And if you would like to hear Cath talk about parenting and creativity she was one of the first guests on the Etsy podcast https://soundcloud.com/etsy-699847215/episode-6-my-bearded-pigeon

Cath and Neil.
Owner, Creator, Designer
Hello! My name is Cath and I run My Bearded Pigeon with my husband Neil. I do the creative stuff Neil helps with book keeping, post office runs and wrangling kids so I can do this!
Husband + Helper
Neil does a lot of packing and posting and pick up and deliveries of fabric. He also spends a lot of time at our local post office.
Janine helps us with sewing some of the cushions when it gets a bit crazy busy for us - she lives just down the road which is very handy.
Baxter is our Irish wolfhound cross big puppy. He lays under our feet when we are working and goes running in the forest with Cath to protect her from sticks that look like snakes.
a production company
makes enamel pins with my designs
they are printing my design on tote bags - they can prints hundreds at a time.
A printing service.
I chose this company to work with as they are committed to supporting small creative businesses. They print on certified organic cotton and they have an excellent reputation for producing high quality fabric.

Frequently asked questions
Authenticity is important to us:
We are a small family run business operated from our home in the forest in Australia. All fabric is exclusive to us! We have access to a private collection of maps and we have the maps digitally printed onto fabric. The maps are over 100 years old, sometimes there are spelling mistakes and other inaccuracies on some of the maps, but we feel it would be disingenuous to correct them. Some colours are more vibrant than others, we try to portray the colours accurately. Sometimes place names are blurred due to the age of the maps, not all maps are in English. Please use the zoom feature under each photo for a better look!
Just a reminder we sell the covers only.
Cards, Gifts, Presents etc.
We are happy to add cards or notes to the package but we cannot gift wrap as this increases the cost of shipping. We do not send a receipt with the item ( as you would have received an email from etsy / paypal at time of purchase) however we do have to write the amount the package is worth on the green customs form that is placed on the outside of the envelope.
Australia Post information
Australia Post DOES NOT OFFER INTERNATIONAL TRACKING as standard, however you can upgrade toinclude tracking, please contact us prior for a quote, minimum cost is $45AUD. All orders within Australia will have trackng as part of price.
Once a package is shipped we can not be responsible if your package does not arrive in time for a special occasion. Sometimes parcels are delayed for several weeks in customs, this seems to be the case in Germany and Canada, we have no control over this. If you do not receive your package please notify us within 30days of ordering. If the recipient moves house within 8 weeks of the order being posted internationally and the order does not arrive or is not returned to sender we are not responsible for this.
Part of what makes our item covers so great is that the fabric is exclusive to us, that is why we don't sell the fabric by itself. Inserts can be bought cheaper than the extra postage costs.
We also came up with this definition of hangry shown on our cushions and wall hangings, and it is subject to copyright. We aim to run our business ethically by using certified organic cottons wherever possible.
Custom and personalised orders
We are no longer doing any new maps as we got to about 180 and decided that was enough! if you cant find what you are looking for it may have sold out so please send me a convo and I can let you know.
