About

Contemporary Wire Wrapped by Mylene Foster

My shop is located in my small home in a suburb south of Seattle, in Tacoma. My etsy shop has been open since 2006!

I do everything in my shop from designing, ordering of supplies, making the actual jewelry, photography, shipping, emails, and marketing. I make all the wire wrap links one by one using a few hand tools. I also forge my own silver components and chains. I use premade components such as earwires, clasps, and fine chains. I order gemstones that are precut and polished from suppliers overseas. There are so many enjoying aspects of creating jewelry that I wish I had more time to do it!

I try to make the most connection between myself and my jewelry. I strive not only for excellence in execution of my craft but also for thoughtfulness in the content. The more I can give of myself to a piece of jewelry, the more handmade it is. If I can stay away from shortcuts, I would and I think this is a constant challenge for me as a crafter/artist.

I've been making wire wrapped jewelry for 10 years, mostly self taught. You can be confident of the value and craftmanship that comes with each piece you buy from my store.

I love to make jewelry that a woman can wear with confidence and pride which will last for many years. With this, I hope to bring jewelry from the work of my hands to your treasured jewelry box.

I'm a jewelry artist specializing in wire wrapping and wire work since 2003. I'm mostly self taught beyond the basics of wire wrapping. I'm also trained on basic metalsmithing.

Welcome to my store! You'll find my wire wrapped jewelry highly appealing due to the quality of materials and workmanship. Only genuine natural freshwater cultured pearls, precious and semiprecious stones are used. The gemstones used are of higher quality rated AA or AAA: machine cut, minimal to absent inclusions and flaws to the unaided eye.

Its unique look comes from the wire wrapping and looping process that is quite time consuming but dramatic in its effect. This requires a high level of skill and patience. Most pieces take several hours to complete. For more information about me and my shop please look up my ABOUT page.

ABOUT THE JEWELRY

14/20 (or 1/20th 14 karat) gold filled or gold overlay is made by heat and pressure bonding a thin layer of gold to a brass core. Karat gold covers the brass or silver surface, making it tarnish resistant. The value and thickness of gold filled is greater than gold plated because gold filled has an actual layer of karat gold, not just a microscopic film. It is economical as you can enjoy the rich look of gold at a fraction of the cost. It is about 30% more expensive than sterling silver. Gold-filled items are generally considered lifetime products while goldplated will eventually wear off.

Fine silver is 99.99% silver as opposed to sterling silver which is 92.5%. I occasionally use fine silver because they are easier to work with for a particular design. Fine silver tarnishes slower than sterling silver and is more valuable due to the higher silver content.

Argentium silver is sterling silver (92.5%) with a bit of germanium added to the remaining 7.5%. This makes it tarnish free and is particularly ideal for pearl, turquoise and opal jewelry when one would like it to remain shiny. These gemstones do not tolerate tarnish cleaning solutions.

I only select the best stones in a strand. I pay a lot more per strand but the quality is undeniably better. And from these strands, I exclude stones with obvious inclusions, cracks, dents and cloudiness. For really large stones, minor fractures or inclusions are unavoidable and I make sure I describe this in the listing if there is one. It is very difficult to show this in photos even up close. The pricing will reflect the quality of the stone. For earrings, besides getting the best looking stones of the bunch, I make sure they are closely matched.
