About

I am a button admirer, collector and creator of unique antique button jewelry!

I started my button jewelry business in the fall of 2007, a year after I retired as an elementary school teacher. I have always had an interest in history, having grown up surrounded by antiques and with parents who taught me to appreciate old things. I’ve always loved buttons. I used to play with buttons from my mother’s button box for hours on the living room rug. That didn’t stop once I grew up! I started experimenting with ways I could wear some of the pretty buttons I had. That led to a rather large collection of jewelry and to the beginnings of my button jewelry business.

I love all aspects of my craft…the search for buttons, the designing, the history I uncover and the wonderful connections I’ve made while talking to people at craft shows and farmers markets. I am a teacher and I guess I always will be. It’s very rewarding to be able to share knowledge of any kind and to have it be appreciated.

Welcome to Martha L. Welch, Vintage Button Jewelry! My jewelry-making process starts with careful selection of vintage and/or antique collectable buttons. Often, I will use a single button in a piece of jewelry, as each is beautiful by itself. Then, based upon color, style or historical period, I mount them on vintage or “antique-looking” findings in order to achieve that special look. I fasten the buttons with craft glue that does not harden or become brittle or in any way harm the buttons I use. My object is to share my love of old buttons by creating “wearable history” and, at the same time, not damage the buttons.
I provide my buyers with historical information about their buttons and it is not unusual to see people at my craft shows, both men and women, taking in the history as much as the variety of buttons on display. Along with selling jewelry, I also give talks and visual presentations on buttons.

Additional policies and FAQs
The buttons in my jewelry are old and therefore not always perfect. There will be some wear after their many years of use. If, however, they come apart from their settings during normal wear, please let me know and I will do what I can to remedy this. I want happy customers!
