The Nadira Philosophy

My design philosophy is inspired by the raw materials I use, and the result is a range of jewellery that is dominated by gemstones and precious metal.

Many gemstone traders are content to label stones as 'natural' regardless of whether or not they have been artificially enhanced. Often the label 'natural' means only that the stones are non-synthetic, ie. that they have not been created in a lab. However, many so-called 'natural' gemstones undergo a variety of alterations and enhancement treatments to improve appearance and/or durability. It is often not considered necessary to disclose stone treatments to the buyer when they are considered to be standard practice. I disagree. I support the natural, untreated gemstone trade and wherever possible I use only untreated stones in my designs. If enhanced stones are ever used, I believe that the customer has the right to full disclosure. As such, in the rare occasions i use treated stones or pearls I will always explain what the treatement is and why it is used (see below for more information).

In a world of synthetic copies and cheap imitations, I believe it is more important than ever to support the trade of natural gems and to enjoy the unique beauty of hand-crafted designs. I aim to bring you jewellery with an individual and natural beauty that can be so rare to find amongst the array of mass-produced items we are bombarded with each day. Effort and care have gone into the design and creation of each piece. I am not a 'mass-producer' and many of my pieces are one-offs. Even where certain designs are repeated, each piece of Nadira Designs jewellery is unique and individual. Every stone shimmers in its own way, and every twist of wire is unique so no two items are ever exactly alike. You will always be buying a special and individual piece of lovingly handmade jewellery.

Enhancement guide:

I only use the best quality materials I can find, sourcing my stones, precious metal and other beads both locally and globally. Although I always choose natural, untreated stones whenever possible, in rare occasions it can not be possible to fulfil specific designs with only untreated materials. Failure to identify enhancement of natural gemstones, when present, is an unfair trade practice, therefore it is Nadira Designs policy to disclose all known enhancements of stones, bone and pearl products (with the exception of normal cutting and polishing) so the customer can make their own decision. Please refer to this guide for a list of Possible enhancements found in Nadira Designs jewellery. Individual item descriptions will always refer back to this guide.

S = Stabilized: Also known as bonding, stabilization involves the use of a colourless bonding agent (commonly plastic) on a porous gemstone to give it durability and improve appearance. This treatment is often used on fragile stones such as turquoise which is soft, chalky and porous when mined, and often not suitable for jewellery use. To make it suitable it is permeated with a clear resin for durability.

B = Bleached: The use of chemical agents to lighten or remove color. This is a common treatment for bone and pearl products, and some gemstones.

H = Heating: Heating is a common treatment for many gems, especially precious gems like sapphire and ruby, with the aim of improving or altering colour and/or clarity. Heating is accepted by the gemological industry as a legitimate treatment as it does not introduce anything foreign or synthetic into the stone, rather it mimics what can happen in nature.

I am always willing to discuss custom orders.
