Foster mom turned maker

Hi! I’m Jennifer Chisam, wife, mommy, Yoga Therapist & avid maker. I started NamaSTAY Earth Friendly during the coronavirus pandemic of 2020. My yoga classes were cancelled and because of my son’s health, I no longer felt safe going to client’s homes. A local friend asked if I might be willing to sew facial masks to sell. In the weeks that followed, I sewed over 250 masks! And I didn’t get tired of the sewing! In fact, I started thinking of other things I could sew. Around the same time, I learned about Family Cloth. I thought, “I can make that!” Within the first use or two, I was hooked. I’ve always hated wastefulness, so this was a perfect fit.

But let me back up a bit…I learned how to sew when I was 15 and was pretty much obsessed with sewing most of my life. When my husband, Scott and I got married, our guest bedroom was my sewing room. We wanted a baby, though, and I sewed blankets and bibs, hoping to become pregnant. But after 6 years, there was no baby. God had another plan for us. We looked into adoption, but my heart was called to foster care. Now, I’m sure that no family ever had an easy journey through foster care. But, man, that was hard! Our first placement was a precious little 3-week old baby boy, and I (very happily) lost my sewing room. But he was very, very sick. He had major surgery to save his life when he was just 2 months old. They placed a feeding tube in his belly, and we thought “We can’t do this!” But we were already in love with him, so there was no turning back. It took 2 years to adopt him, and 4 years to get the feeding tube removed, but I’m so happy to report that today he’s a healthy, happy boy!

Throughout these trials, I closed my Yoga studio to focus more time on being the mommy he needed. I continued to do Yoga Therapy and teach a few classes, but I limited my work hours. As any working mom knows, the desire to balance work (money!) with family time is super hard. With his health issues, I have chosen to work just part time and spend more time with him. But that was a financial hardship on our family. Also, one of our family goals is to purchase a slightly larger home or add on to this one so we can foster more children! By opening this shop, I can spend more time at home with my precious son, help the environment, and do what I love. Full disclosure: we're not yet a zero-waste family. But we're making small changes each day that add up to a big change for the environment!

Your purchase will accomplish a few things:
1-You’ll help save the Earth!
2-You’ll save money by not purchasing disposables
3-You’ll help me earn money from home, so I can be the mommy I’ve always wanted to be
4-You’ll help us make room for another precious foster child.
