Nameless Wonders: the home of myriad hand-stitched textile animals
Welcome to the colorful world of Nameless Wonders. I’m Karen, and am based in Glasgow, Scotland. I was trained in ceramics and was a professional ceramicist for many years. But when I switched to working in textiles I realized it was my natural medium and have never looked back.
The ideas come really easily - as though those animals are just bursting to get out into the world!
I’m inspired by so many things it’s impossible to list them all, but inspirations include battered old toys; animators as diverse as Aardman Animation and the Quay Brothers; Edward Lear and Spike Milligan’s books of illustrations and rhymes; artists Jean Dubuffet and Louise Bourgeois; and inspiration directly from the animals and fabrics themselves.
I love experimenting with and changing the work constantly, and aim never to make two pieces identical - that way you also get something totally unique when you buy from me. Hope you like the shop!
I was born and am still based in Glasgow, Scotland, working as a full-time maker from my studio space. I was a professional ceramicist for many years, but when I switched to textiles I realized it was my natural medium and have never looked back.
All the animals are irregularly hand stitched, and I make a feature of fraying many of the fabrics - it adds to the scruffy charm! - so when your animal arrives looking unkempt it’s not a fault in the work. And it’s advisable not to try and neaten them up… they don’t like that!
Much of the packaging I use is reused, but is always in very good condition. I package everything carefully and securely.
