My bag arrived in good time and I love its look and durability. The leather-looking bottom and handle straps will last much better than the lauhala bag I was using for hula. It's also a good size for hula since I don't often need to take implements along with me. I am thrilled to have this bag!
Designer of unique handmade bags
Thank you for taking the time to read my story and for supporting handmade.
I have my little brother to thank for the name of my business. As a child, he couldn't pronounce Rhonda and somehow came up with Nani (pronounced naw-nee). My whole family has called me that since. Later, after falling in love with Hawaii, I found out nani is the Hawaiian word for beautiful. I live in Ventura California with my adorable husband, two beautiful daughters and one sweet dog named Sadie.
I started sewing for my family and friends before selling my creations about 15 years ago. As my two daughters got older and started developing their own style they asked me to make them purses to go with their ever changing moods, and to be different from their friends who shopped at the mall. I made my first bags out of used sweatshirts with my girls input all the way. Now they had unique bags that made them happy.
I have always been somewhat of a free spirit and feel being yourself and unique is important. I had so much fun with those first bags that I just kept trying new ideas. Soon I could envision just about every piece of fabric as a bag. I have purchased bag patterns, but they sit in a drawer because I truly enjoy the challenge of creating my own patterns. The fabric itself helps me with that process. That's why you'll see my shop filled with an eclectic selection.
Now I look for fabric stores everywhere I go. I even had to buy an extra suit case one year on a trip to Hawaii just for bringing home my new fabric.
My favorite thing is when someone asks me to make them something that suites their personality, they get to be part of the process and end up with the perfect bag for their needs and style.
It was a no-brainer for me once I heard about this great handmade community called Etsy. My shop is stocked with bags, wallets, pillows and scarves for now but I add new creations all the time.
