The Story behind Natso

I have a visceral need to express myself. It took me a long time before realizing it, but this is the one thing that keeps me alive and vibrant. I believe that art has the power to heal, uplift and inspire both the artist and the observer. I consider my work as successful when a viewer identifies with the ideas represented and experiences their own personal feelings and emotions. The truth lies inside each of us. Conscious or not, our inner child communicates constantly with us. Do we pay attention? Not all the time... I use images and colors as a way to express my subconscious, the state of mind of my inner child. Even if a piece may seem troubling or disturbing at first, I don’t suppress or censure myself. By exposing its essence, I find it to be very liberating. I think art is a real strong way to enlighten and guide us toward healing to finally be able to grow as a human being. By charring my story and the story of others, I want to awake and bring up emotions, provoke a reaction to the viewer.
Almost everything I see in my environment can inspire me. But it's my emotions that guide me and set the tone of the piece. The first thing I do when I start a canvas is choosing the colors. Often, I don't know what the subject will be or what I want to do. Of course, now and then I'll have a precise idea of what I want to paint, but mostly I let my subconscious guide me. I have more a spontaneous approach. I allow the work to happen and take form just by letting my hand move onto the canvas. Through the process, it's the subject that reveals itself to me. When the image forms, I move from there to complete the subject.
Expressionism and action painting appeals to me because they come naturally. The need to express myself and the importance of spontaneous gesture, the freedom of movement, not thinking nor analysing, to see where it’s going to lead me is central for me. Created with passion, my art is very intuitive and is emotionally charged.

Mostly, my art comes from my subconscious, so when I start a piece, I have no idea what the subject will be. It takes form as the image progress. I usually start by picking 2 or 3 colors, which are determined by my mood, and I just start to paint. I let the painting guide me. The subject is revealed along the way as the image forms onto the canvas.

I use acrylic paint and medium because that material dries quickly enough to let me easily create textures by applying layers of paint or modeling paste. Whether I use palate knives, mix-media or a dripping technique, most of my pieces are textured. Layering and texturing gives depth and liveliness to a piece. I also like to mix mat and glossy paint onto the same piece to give it a twist.
The technique I choose depends of my frame of mind. I don’t have a precise way to paint; I can use my brushes, my fingers, palate knives, I sometime throw the paint, work on the floor or on an easel. Whether on a big or a small canvas, I like to explore and try some new things. Sometimes I even change position during a painting session, looking at the artwork from different angles. I don’t believe in having just one style. I prefer exploring and trying some new ways of doing things. But, there are three things that are common and constant in all of my pieces. Whatever the technique used, they are always very colorful, vibrant and textured.
