I was a late artistic bloomer..

For me, watercolor is the perfect medium. It’s elusive, unpredictable and has a mind of its own. I’m fascinated by its nuances. One minute the colors are bold and electric and the next they’re delicate and transparent. If I painted every day for the rest of my life, I still wouldn’t know all there is to know about watercolor.

I didn’t start painting until I was 25. Before then I had never taken a single art class and my drawing skills didn’t exist. It’s been a interesting journey learning to paint and draw at the same time but in my mind, one can’t exist without the other. I’ve never tried painting with any other medium. Once I tried watercolor, I was hooked!

Traditionally, watercolor is done by first drawing the subject matter in pencil on the paper and then painting on top of the sketch. I decided the pencil marks were inhibiting so I eliminated them. Now I just start from the top and paint my way down the paper. It’s a lot riskier, but unexpected things happen along the way and I like that. I like the feeling of losing control of a painting and then trying to get it back.

My subject matter almost always involves the figure. I choose busy urban settings where I can use lots of color and have people bustling about. Although I often move things around for composition’s sake, I rarely eliminate elements to make a “pretty” picture. If there happens to be telephone poles in the scene, they’ll likely end up in my painting!

In the last few years I’ve been asked to paint the poster artwork for several art shows throughout Florida. My work was also featured on the cover of Delray Beach magazine. I feel very fortunate to have had such wonderful opportunities to display my work right in my own backyard.

Hi and welcome to Negley Watercolors. I want you to feel confident with your painting or print purchase. I use only the best quality materials for my work. I paint my original watercolors on 140 lb. Arches Watercolor Paper and choose only high-quality, richly pigmented watercolor paints. For my professional giclee' prints I use fine art paper and archival inks. It's actually hard to tell the difference between the prints and the originals. I sincerely believe you will be 100% satisfied with your purchase!
