↠ Welcome
Nepantla jewelry is meticulously handmade in Los Angeles, California using recycled guitar strings, hand stamped metals, and natural gemstones & crystals.

Every piece of funkie Nepantla jewelry is individually hand crafted with up-cycled guitar strings that have been generously donated by some of the top musicians in Southern California. Our strings come from various instruments such as the acoustic guitar, upright bass guitar, pedal steel guitar, bajo quinto guitar and electric guitar. They all have unique and very interesting stories to them - from being played in rowdy California honky tonks to playing heavy metal festivals in Europe.

Sustainability is important to us, therefore the idea of recycling old guitar strings and turning them into unique pieces of jewelry has been a great way to creatively keep these materials from ending up in a landfill. These strings once made extraordinary music and now you can make a bold statement with our hand crafted and one of a kind pieces of wearable art. At Nepantla, we take pride in placing love and care into every piece of “funkie” jewelry that is created. We invite you to browse our catalog and sincerely anticipate that you will find items that you truly love.

About

Handcrafted "funkie" wearable art, made in Southern California with love and intention.

↠ Meet the Designer
Wendy Sánchez is a Los Angeles based jewelry designer and owner of Nepantla. She was born and raised in the inner-city area of East Los Angeles, CA and earned her BA from UCLA.

“Creativity is a drug I cannot live without.” -Cecil B. DeMille

Wendy discovered her passion for creative expression through making statement art jewelry while she was searching for ways to cope with the symptoms of Social Anxiety Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and Major Depressive Disorder. She found herself getting lost in "making stuff" and learned that when she was creating jewelry she was also diminishing the constant symptoms she dealt with daily. Creating jewelry became therapeutic for her. Additionally, over the years she has enjoyed attending live music events. Through live music, she also found self-healing and relief. Over time, Wendy's truly unique style was born, incorporating into her jewelry all three of her favorite mediums to work with: hand stamped metals, up-cycled guitar strings, and natural gemstones & crystals.

↠ Shop Name
“Nepantla” is a Nahuatl (Mexica/Aztec language) word that indicates a space of “in between.”

Struggling with self-identity, as many people do at some point in their lives, Nepantla designer Wendy Sánchez felt this term resonated with her own experiences growing up in the United States as a descendant of Mexican and Salvadorian parents. Many times, she experienced this in betweenness with feelings of being different and not fitting in. She was in between different countries (United States – Mexico – El Salvador) and in between different cultures (American – Chicano/a – Mexican – Salvadorian).

“No soy ni de aquí, ni de allá” (I am neither from here, nor from there)

↠ Giving Back: Sound Art LA
At Nepantla, we strongly believe that the arts, including music education, are essential in the lives of young children. Sound Art LA is an organization of professional musicians who provide music education to children K - 12 in some of the most under-served areas of Los Angeles, CA. A portion of all Nepantla profits is donated to Sound Art LA annually. If you would like to learn more about Sound Art, we encourage you to please visit their website at www.soundartla.org.

↠ Sustainability
In our attempts to reduce Nepantla’s environmental impact, we believe in integrating green/sustainable practices into our business standards. Our jewelry is packaged in jewelry cards, bags, and boxes that have been made from recycled resources by local/small businesses. We also encourage you to recycle these, as well as recycle and reuse the shipping materials used to deliver your package. You can build a fort for your kids or a maze for your cats, create a cardboard postcard, add to your compost pile, reuse to ship out your own packages, etc. The possibilities are endless! Make Earth Day every day and Stay Funkie!

Precious Metals Used

The metals used in Nepantla jewelry include: Argentium Silver, Sterling Silver, Fine Silver, Silver filled, Gold filled, Copper, and Brass.

What is Argentium Silver?

Argentium Silver, made with 93.5% pure silver (exceeding the traditional Sterling standard), is hypoallergenic and tarnish resistant. It is brighter/whiter than traditional Sterling, white gold, or platinum. All Argentium Silver is made from ethically sourced silver.

What is Silver Filled?

Silver filled metal is a 5% or 10% layer of thick/durable sterling silver that is bonded with a copper or brass alloy base. It is hypoallergenic and tarnish resistant. This metal is more affordable but provides the same beauty of Sterling silver.

What is Gold Filled?

Gold filled metal is a thick layer of gold that has been bonded with a core metal (usually brass and sometimes Sterling). It is legally required to contain 5% gold by weight. Most gold-filled is 12kt or 14kt gold-filled. This is an affordable alternative to solid gold. Gold filled jewelry is hypoallergenic and tarnish resistant.

Skin Reaction to Metals

If your jewelry is causing your skin to turn green, this is not a sign of low quality jewelry, it is a natural reaction caused by the metal in your jewelry coming in contact with the acids/oils of your skin or something on your skin (like lotion). An easy and quick way to help prevent this is to paint a coat of jewelry polish or clear nail polish on your jewelry. You may need to do this again as the polish may wear off with time.
