The New England Watercolor Society (NEWS) is one of the oldest and most prestigious watercolor societies in America. NEWS was founded in 1885 as the Boston Watercolor Society. Past members include Childe Hassam, John Singer Sargent, and honorary member Andrew Wyeth. Membership has grown from the thirteen founding members to nearly 200 signature members and over 200 associate members from every New England state.
NEWS continues to nurture and support both emerging and established artists by hosting workshops and demonstrations, and by offering at least two juried shows each year. One annual show is open to signature members only, while a second is open to all watermedia artists, members and non-members alike, alternating between a New England Regional and a North American Open.

5 out of 5 starsThis painting resembles a place I love. The fact that it's a one-of-a-kind original was another key factor in my decision to purchase it, as was the fact that when I first saw it and experienced its impact, it was (and still is) on display in an exhibit not far from my home. And when that exhibition eventually ends, I will be able to go directly to the venue and collect the painting in person, without having to worry about any shipping details or pay any shipping charges. Dealing with the New England Water Color Society (the "shop") this way (via Etsy, a first for me) has been a pleasure so far.

5 out of 5 starsI own one other painting by Russel Whitten and have watched his painting style grow and mature over the years. This painting is the essence of my memories of many years of travels to Monhegan Island, ME. Russel has truly captured the soul of that hill overlooking the harbor on Monhegan as well as mastered his media!
