It’s fun reading. Most posts are an interesting, historical or geographic profile of where a NSB journal is shipping. We have a virtual map with red pins (and assorted other info) of destinations, past & present. Some of those destinations are Hollywood. A big time HBO producer buys my journals for herself. And her friends. Pretty damn cool. Last summer a journal shipped to the international sailing yacht, ‘Eos’ while docked in New York Harbor. Research will reveal who the owner is.
Materials
Leather, fine art papers (115w, 120w, 135w or 250w), silver and copper, imported silk head bands. All sorts of cool stuff.
All journals are bound in leather. No canvas or wood or plastic and no Coptic stitching. Just the finest oil tanned or stone oiled hides binding the finest quality art papers. All pages are hand torn with deckle edges, folded into hand stitched signatures. Old world bookbinding methods are applied with linen and glue and each journal is finished with imported silk head bands.
NewSouthBooks is primarily in the business of making custom order journals. I'll make a journal to specification for you. Size, leather and color, number of pages. Lined pages? Just ask. Perhaps a collection set? How many? Engraving, personalized imagery, polished and distressed metals, specialized printing. All this is what custom journal making is all about. It's easy. Contact me, begin the dialogue and I'll make your journal.

5 out of 5 starsMichael is a wonderful seller. I sent him my husband's old Bible and he completely restored it with a beautiful handmade leather. My husband was so ecstatic to have received the bible. Michael responded very quickly, and kept me in the loop during the entire process. I can't thank him enough on how beautiful and amazing the Bible looks. He truly is amazing!!!!

5 out of 5 starsWonderful customer service. I received a call from the owner the day after placing my order, he was tremendously pleasant. He called to inquire what I wanted the personalized engraved message to be and to assure me it would arrive in time for Christmas. It did and the quality is superb! My 12 year old son was over the moon when he opened his present Christmas morning. Thank you!

5 out of 5 starsYou can tell that a lot of careful and considerate work went into this journal. I would’ve preferred the pages to be less stiff, as they are more like card stock than paper, but other than that this really is the perfect soft, high quality pebbled leather journal. It’s pretty much exactly what I was looking for.

5 out of 5 starsI ordered a bible with Michael for Father's Day. He followed well all the notes that I left him. My father and I, both, were impressed by the final product. It makes for a handsome gift or personal bible.

Books sur le Bayou
NewSouthBooks began quite by happenstance. A few years ago, my very creative wife made a piece of jewelry, a small journal pendant for a friend, a professional storyteller. Enlisting my help, I tore pages and add artwork. The process was fun, something new but making tiny books didn't hold great appeal.
The special gift to that special friend proved to be an enormous success, so much so that we made ten more. I began to embrace not only the task but the discipline. The effort became an application of skill sets. But still . . . making and binding miniature leather journals was much like building a boat in a bottle. After discussion of this very matter, we decided to make an assortment of larger journals. The artisanship became of much greater importance.
Researching styles of leather journals in the market place, I discovered most were 'stitched' to the book's spine. The stitching is attractive and visually pleasing but lacked the pureness and ethic of a truly bound book. I wanted my journals bound in old world technique, yet with the same present-day materials used by commercial binders. Each and every one of my journals is a real book constructed from the real leather and the highest quality fine art papers.
As a visual artist this new craft provided me yet another opportunity for the inclusion of original artwork. The blank pages of any book beg for entry and if I adorn inside covers or middle signatures with inventive and unique art, my objective completes itself.
Finally, a word about this place, our farm, our life here in this green-gold banana republique de Louisiane: We are blessed in most ways. Time slows down here. It's elusive. This place requires conformity to its rhythm and cadence, its pulse. An ancient and alluvial bayou laps gently at our yard's edge, the primordial woods that surround us command respect. This is a place of history and romance, mystique and voodoo. This is the place where we make our art and bind these journals, a place we fish and explore. This is a place of Southern novels
