Hello, my name is Nicola, I am a painter specialising in simple still life paintings.

Born in Cornwall, I can remember as a child being encouraged by Mum to be creative and Granny taught me how to crochet. I learnt macramé, I would draw, paint, make tapestry samplers and embroider. Looking back I can see that creativity was a natural and inherent part of my family life.

I have memories of being given craft kits for Christmas, a weaving loom, paint by numbers and glitter pictures. I enjoyed the satisfying feeling of having accomplished something that I had made myself.

I went on to complete an Art Diploma at Cornwall College and then studied Printed Textile Design at Loughborough College of Art & Design. After completing my Degree I moved to Oxford and worked as a Freelance Textile Designer for a while before getting a job at the Bodleian Library.

I am glad I kept some of the things I made when I was a child and examples of my textile designs and drawings because they remind me of when I was creative. I see now that life had taken over and I had forgotten about my creativity. It had somehow been lost along the way even though I continued to make Christmas cards and did some painting and sewing it was not a regular part of my life. I’d visit exhibitions and be inspired to paint again and the creative urge would be stirred but I didn’t pursue it.

I moved back to Cornwall over 25 years ago and in my work I am now surrounded by artists and designers all engaging with their creative careers. Now, out of a need, I’ve started painting again and am making it an integral and regular part of my life. Finding the time and energy to devote to painting is still a challenge alongside a full time job but I am satisfied and relieved it is part of my life again.

I am remembering why I chose Textile Design as my subject at College because I am still inspired by colour, pattern and texture. For my paintings, I am taking as a starting point, a beautiful bowl or cup and creating a simple still life which evokes for me a sense of quiet peace and beauty.

I have rediscovered my path again and am coming back to myself through creativity. Painting nourishes me and is a refuge. I am seeking the stillness, spaciousness and quiet that is reflected in my paintings and would like others to experience this when they view my work. This feeling of warmth, peace and calm began in my early family life and through my creative work I am grateful that I can connect with these qualities again.

Thank you to my lovely friends and family for your encouraging kind words that help me to pursue my creative life again.

During lockdown, I started listening to a lot of new music and it became an important and joyful part of my life. I decided to join a community choir, I haven’t sung in a choir since I was at school and my voice isn’t great, but I am loving it!
