About NicolaBriggsCeramics

Video summary: Stall View

I design and make contemporary ceramics out of porcelain clay which is high-fired to 1250 degrees in my kiln up to 3 times

I graduated from Staffordshire University in 1998 with a BA:Hons Design: Ceramics and set up my first studio with the help of The Prince's Trust. I have taken part in many craft fairs, exhibitions and shows such as The Country Style Festive Fair at the NEC in Birmingham.

Inspiration for my work comes from family walks and days out with our dog, Buddy.
I love collecting feathers, shells, pebbles, driftwood, leaves and pine cones to use as inspiration for my work.

Photographs of the landscape and sunsets all feature heavily in my sketchbook designs. The ever-changing light in my sunset photos is the influence behind the muted colour palette that I love so much!

I like to hand-build my ceramics, this is a process where the clay can be rolled out or manipulated to create textures and then the form of the piece takes shape.
Sometimes I make and use plaster moulds to help shape the piece. Textures are created in the work from either pushing collected objects into the clay and layering coloured slips and underglazes into the pieces. The surfaces are reworked with multiples layers and can be scraped back until the desired effect is achieved.
Each piece can be fired up to three times ;biscuit, glaze and lustre firings the hottest of which is up to 1250 degrees !

I love the Japanese Wabi-Sabi aesthetic, which is that there is beauty in the imperfect.
My work is ‘perfectly imperfect’ and quite organic and there may be marks and differences as a result of individually handcrafting each piece.
Although pieces could be on a similar theme, no two pieces are ever identical. All sizes are approximate due to the handcrafted process of making.

I also make commissions, if you would like a special piece personalised or in a different colour, then please get in touch. I look forward to hearing from you.

Gift wrapping and packaging

Eco-friendly Brand Values - as little waste as possible/reuse/recycle

So with this in mind, all items are beautifully wrapped recycled fibre tissue paper or recycled Kraft shredded fibres with my Branded Kraft gift boxes also made from recycled fibres.

Clean plain outer boxes often re-used from the deliveries I receive any re-used packaging peanuts inside are again clean and recyclable. I also use cornstarch peanuts.

I use the paper packaging tape when possible.

The ribbon that I use to gift-wrap your orders beautifully is new and clean and I hope will be re-used again by the recipient.

To reduce my carbon footprint I try to shop locally for materials and to be sustainably sourced.
