Ok, the book is cute and very well made, but I ordered a necklace, not a pair of earrings. Plus it took a very long time to get here and missed the Christmas party I was going to gift it at. Your stuff is very well made but this order was a bit of a problem. I guess I can make it into two necklaces myself if I go out any buy some chains...

These earrings are beautifully crafted and so very sweet. And an extra bonus is the special packaging. All my questions and e-mails were happily answered. So glad I went ahead with this purchase even though there was no other feed back! Don't hesitate to buy these tiny books, you'll love them.

Handmade jewelry for the jewelry lover who wants something different.

Welcome to Nicolette Tallmadge Designs!

My name is Nicolette Tallmadge. I am a mixed media jeweler and have been making jewelry since 1991. I started my company, Nicolette Tallmadge Designs in 1997.

I developed an interest in jewelry making shortly after graduating from high school. My early pieces were experiments in a variety of different materials. Beadwork, wire weaving, polymer clay, and fused glass encompassed the variety of materials and techniques that were used in creating my jewelry pieces. The first pieces were bulky and sculptural, more experiments of form and material, rather than actual functional jewelry pieces. An eternal experimenter, I was more interested in the process of jewelry making rather than the materials. Creating jewelry out of paper came from a natural extension of experimentation.

My work received a new dimension when I worked on a bachelor’s degree in fine art. With concentration on jewelry and metalworking, I learned the basics of soldering, sawing, casting, and stone setting. While I enjoyed metalworking, I found that I used my metalworking skills to augment my mixed media method of creating jewelry. My entry into my business occurred in the summer of 1997 when the buyer of the Library of Virginia approached me for creating some custom made jewelry for their gift shop.

A common misconception about my paper jewelry is that it is too fragile for everyday use. Some people feel that paper is too common of a material compared to “real” jewelry materials like precious metal and gemstones. After all, paper is something you see every day, in the home, in the office or just blowing down the street in the wind. The papers that I use in the majority of my jewelry are rag papers or hand made Japanese papers, which are made to withstand watercolors and screen printing and are used in interior decoration, furniture, and storage. When rolled into beads or coated acrylic sealant, these papers exhibit amazing strength. What excites me about paper is its incredible versatility. It can be painted, folded, molded, and layered with other materials to create effects that are impossible to achieve in any other material. When combined with metals or gems, there is a wonderful interplay between texture and color that is totally unique and exciting.

From my early experiments, I created two distinct lines of jewelry:

The Paper Bead Series

The Paper Bead Series is comprised of earrings, bracelets and necklaces made mostly out of handmade paper beads. Each bead starts with a sheet paper. I choose papers that have interesting patterns, nice color combinations, or unique surface textures. The native hand made papers from Japan, Nepal, India, and Italy are frequently used in my beads. Once I choose a paper, I cut the sheet into long strips, and then hand roll each strip into small cylindrical bead. After the paper strips are rolled, I coat each bead with many layers of an acrylic sealant, which makes each bead water and dirt resistant. I finally finish each bead by capping each end of the bead with sterling silver or 14 kt gold fill. Because of the nature of hand made paper and of the rolling process to make each bead, every single bead is a unique piece.

Once all of the paper beads are completed, I create necklaces, bracelets, and earrings by matching each bead with other materials such as sterling silver, glass beads, semi-precious stone chips, or bits of bone or clay beads. Each piece is a unique work, and the majority of my designs are one-of-a kind.

The Ojos Series

The inspiration of this design has come from the traditional craft of “Ojos de Dios”.

Taken from the Spanish words for “Eye of God”, the Ojo de Dios are a symbol of good fortune and favor from the gods of nature. God’s Eyes are made of two straight sticks tied together in a cross form. Different colored yarn is then woven around the sticks making a cross shaped pattern with a single dark “eye” in the center. The most important part of the Ojo is the center “eye”, where the two sticks cross. It is believed that using black yarn or black fiber to color the center of the eye will allow the gods to see through the Ojo so they are able to watch over the house the Ojo resides in. Some modern Ojos weavers use mirrors for the center of the God’s Eye instead of black yarn. The different colors of yarn used in the Ojos have special meaning, indicating different elements of the universe.

I adapted this traditional design by creating the wooden “skeleton” of the Ojos de Dios is from two crossed pieces of 14 kt gold fill or sterling silver wire and replacing the yarn with thin wire. By expanding the traditional design by using colorful beads and by linking the metal Ojos together, I’ve created dozens of different earring and bracelet designs inspired by this simple Native American craft. Because each piece is hand woven, my earrings and bracelets are very light and very strong.

Additional policies and FAQs
Here are the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about my jewelry. If you have a question that's not listed here please convo me for more information:

A: Yes! If you are purchasing my jewelry as a gift, you can choose to have it gift wrapped in a velveteen jewelry bag and gift tag for an additional $2.50. To order to gift wrapping, simply select "Gift Wrap" in the item variations when you are ordering your jewelry.

A: No, I don't ship internationally at the moment, but I will in the future! Stay tuned on my blog or sign up for my newsletter to get updates on changes to my shipping policies.

You can sign up for updates here:

Q: Why aren’t the patterns on the earrings the same?

A: All of my Paper Bead Jewelry beads are made by rolling strips of handmade paper into beads. Because of the way handmade paper is patterned and because of how the paper is rolled, none of the beads come out looking the exactly the same, which is part of the charm of handmade work.

Q: What happens of I get my Paper Bead jewelry wet?

A: Each paper bead is coated with four coats of acrylic sealant, which protects each bead from dampness, dust, dirt, and regular wear. So while you should remove your jewelry before you take a shower, they won’t be damaged if they happen to get a little wet or if you get caught in the rain. If you do happen to get your jewelry wet, simply put it in a warm dry place to dry. If your jewelry does suffer any damage, you can contact me and I’ll repair them for you.

Q: Are the paper beads hollow inside or is there something in the middle?

A: Each bead is made by tightly winding it around a small piece of wire. This makes a bead which a fairly small hole and is fairly crush-resistant. So yes, each bead does have a hole in the middle, but all of the beads are strung using wire, which also makes them pretty crush-resistant.

Q: Can you create multiples of your Paper Bead earrings?

A: Part of the thing that makes creating my Paper Bead pieces so much fun is the fact that they are all one of a kind. The one-of-a-kind nature of my Paper Bead Jewelry is also part of what makes buying fun as well! So while I can make a similar design, I don’t duplicate a particular piece once I make it.

Q: This jewelry looks delicate! Are you sure it won’t bend or fall apart?

A: My Ojos jewelry is kid tested! Years ago, my two-year old nephew managed to grab one of my Ojos bracelets and I allowed him play with it for an entire weekend. After being stomped on, pulled on, swung around, thrown down a flight of steps, and spending a night in a plastic dump truck, it came out just fine. My Ojos jewelry may look delicate, but trust me, the pieces are a lot tougher than they look.

Q: Are these pieces made using a machine or some type of jig?

A: Nope! Every single one of these pieces are made by hand using pliers and...well, my hands. The only machine made parts in my Ojos jewelry are the ear findings.

Q: I’m interested in a bracelet, but I’m not sure about the size. Can you adjust the length of the bracelet?

A: All of my bracelets are an average of 7 inches in length, but I can adjust the sizing to fit you. Be sure to measure your wrist carefully and to account for how tightly or loosely you wear your bracelets in your measurement. Then choose the appropriate size in the item variations when ordering your bracelet.

Q: I’m sensitive to certain kinds of metal jewelry. What kind of metal do you use in your yours?

A: I use 14kt gold fill and sterling silver ear findings in all of jewelry which work well for everyone except for those with the most sensitive allergies. However, be aware that I also use metal beads or charms in some of my earrings which may be made of nickel, brass or some other type of non hypoallergenic metal. You can find a list of materials used in my jewelry on every product description page. So be sure to carefully read the description for each jewelry piece before you buy.

Q: Will the silver jewelry or the silver parts your jewelry tarnish?

A: All of my silver jewelry and parts are made of sterling silver, so unfortunately because of the nature of silver it may tarnish with regular wear. If your jewelry does happen to get tarnished, you can remove it by using a polishing cloth.

Q: What happens if I damage my jewelry or lose one of my earrings?

A: really stinks when you lose one of your earrings or if your lovely piece of jewelry gets damaged in some way. If you find yourself with only one lonely earring or if your jewelry has suffered a mishap, then contact me and I’ll take care of it!

Q: I have a question that’s not on this list.

A: Please convo me with your question and I'll answer right away.
