Welcome to my Etsy store. I'm Jessica, and I make Native American Style Flutes.
Music has power to heal, and I am honored to be making an instrument that is so often used in a healing manner. Playing a flute can be a contemplative activity, can relieve stress, can provide a way to share beauty with others, and is just plain fun.
I make every flute using a combination of traditional and modern methods taught to me by David Nighteagle. The airway, which is the heart and soul of the flute's unique voice, is finished with fire in a method David learned from his Lakota grandfather. I tune each flute electronically, which means that you will have an instrument you can play with others if you wish to.
The main woods I use for flute-making are grown here in America:
Aromatic Cedar, which is actually a juniper and is also called Tree of Life, is used in healing ceremonies. The wood transforms into beautiful flutes with fantastic colors, grains, and knot patterns. Its incense is used in healing ceremonies.
American Cherry has subtle red and green grain stripes that remind me of the colors of its fruit and leaves.
Black Walnut offers up a honey-like smell when worked and has a wonderful visual depth and warmth.
No stains are used; all flutes show off their natural colors. Each flute's first air chamber (the area you breathe into) is sealed with acrylic for protection from moisture, and the flute's exterior is protected by linseed oil and a buffed finish of natural carnuaba and beeswax. Every flute I make is an individual, partly because of the living spirit of the beautiful wood.
I hope that you will find a flute just right for you.
