It is difficult to photograph stones and the photo does capture the citrine well, but I was truly stunned by the depth and color when I opened the box and held this necklace to the light. I usually say a gift received is a gift returned. Thank you, Nadra, for sharing your gift with me. Peace And blessings to you, my friend!

Beautiful, delicate, stunning color. Love the earrings and necklace. The support received from Nadra from initial to opening the packaging and reading the handwritten note all confirms this is truly a class act.

About

A Passion for Creating Beauty with My Hands

My name is Nadra Holmes – welcome to my Etsy shop! I have been designing and making jewelry for about 10 years now. I’ve always loved making things and working with my hands – cooking is my other great passion and I’ve realized that my cooking process is very similar to the way I create a new design for a necklace. I see an ingredient in the market, maybe some beautifully ripe tomatoes or a blood orange, and I start thinking about how to center a meal around it, just as I start with a particular color or shape of bead or strand of gems that has caught my eye, and then begin to weave a design around it.

For many years I was a film editor. Editing film is also a very hands-on job, very visual, and involves telling a story about something or someone. When creating a piece of jewelry, one is also telling a story – the story of who will wear that piece and how they will wear it – what kind of person will it appeal to? Is it casual or formal? Is their personal style bold or understated? It is also the story of the artist making it – why those particular stones or elements? What do they evoke for the maker? What life experiences have influenced his/her design aesthetic? I lived in Lebanon during my formative teen and young adult years, and the aromas of spice and pine, rich colors and intricate patterns of Islamic art, and natural beauty of the mountains and the Mediterranean Sea have certainly infused my own personal aesthetic in many ways. Stone and metal come from the earth, and I love feeling connected to the collaboration between the earth’s natural beauty (raw stones, wood, and metallic elements) and humans (who recognize the potential in that raw state and refine it in different ways) to create beauty in our world.

The name I choose, NightGardenDesign, comes from the English translation of my twin daughters’ Arabic names – Leila, “leyl” means “night” or “dark beauty”, and Jenan which means “garden”, as in the Garden of Eden or paradise. Night gardens are rare (which is the meaning of my name, Nadra), beautiful, fragrant, and somewhat mysterious. I love all those connotations and the feeling that my daughters are with me every day in my work. I hope that my designs give you as much pleasure as I have enjoyed in creating them.

FAQs
How do I keep my jewelry from tarnishing?

Keep in mind that the more you wear a piece, the less it will tarnish. When tarnishing does occur, use a polishing cloth (I prefer the Sunshine Cloth) regularly to keep your jewelry looking new. Keeping your jewelry in an air-tight bag such as a ziplock will slow the tarnishing process as well. It is also helpful to enclose an anti-tarnishing strip with the piece.

What is the difference between sterling silver and fine silver?

Sterling silver is an alloy consisting of .925 pure silver and .075 another metal, usually copper. Fine silver is .95 to .99 pure silver, with the remainder consisting of impurities that are close to impossible to remove from the metal.

Is gold plate the same as gold filled?

No, absolutely not!

Gold plating is a miniscule layer of solid gold applied to a brass base. The coating is very thin and because it’s not permanently bonded to the base material, can easily chip off or wear away, exposing the brass base. The plating does not compose any measurable proportion of the product’s total weight. It is estimated to be 0.05% or less of the metal product.

By comparison, gold-filled items are regulated by the government and must contain 5% gold by weight. Gold-filled is usually a lifetime product because the gold layer bonded to the brass, rhodium, or sterling silver core is quite thick. The quantity of gold must be at least 1/20th by weight of the total product. Because the gold is permanently bonded to the brass, you can expect the gold to last forever and not wear or chip away. Anyone who has allergic reactions to materials other than gold, can safely wear gold filled jewelry.
