About
Paintings that reflect life and the drama of dreams
Hello and welcome to my shop and exhibit of
paintings and drawings.
I have been creating this sort of thing since childhood. My mother, who was a master at coloring book art, inspired me to be as good as she was. As silly as it seems now, this got me starting down the path of being an artist. The fact that I am self-taught imparts a unique quality to my work. I have a personal approach to drawing figures, organizing space and using of color. An interest in Japanese Noh theater, African, Native American and Medieval art have helped, in part, to form my style.
My shop is called Nightpaintings because I often paint on a black background. I find that colors seem more vivid on the dark background. I have found my comfort zone with water-based gouache. With the addition of egg yolk, I now have a paint that has some of the qualities of oils paint.
With a focus on the intimate, the objects and figures are drawn and painted as if in a dreamscape, a darkened stage, or in a ritual drama. I think of my works in terms of a personal letter. I am addressing one viewer at a time rather than the public in general. I intend to suggest in my paintings, poetry, song, and ritual.
In Manhattan’s East Village. I work out of a small studio.
I have a second studio in a friend’s basement in Minneapolis for creating larger works.
I have had a number of gallery, and several museum exhibitions in New York City. My paintings are in museum and a large number of personal collections.
My paintings are sold unframed. I think framing choices should be left up to the buyer and/or the buyer framer. All paintings are signed and dated. I will ship as soon as I receive full payment. I will accept installments over a reasonable period of time. Shipments will be insured at the buyer’s expense. If needs be, details regarding sale and shipment will be dealt with through email, to the buyer’s satisfaction. Paintings can be returned if the buyer is not satisfied within ten days of delivery.
Thank you for the visit, please return from time to time to see new works.

Shop policies
You might wonder way I name this shop Night Paintings. I have always enjoyed working off of black paper as opposed to white. The colors seem to pop. The second reason is that in the past, when I was working during the day, the painting I did was often done at night.
The subjects of my paintings are often personal and in the spirit of a letter to you rather than a billboard to the public. The spirit I seek to convey, is that of a still life painting. The human form is about the human condition which is often one of being alone in this world. These are not meant to be sad paintings but painting that make you think about the beautiful simple things that are a part of our life.
Well that is some of my background and art making philosophy.
Thank you for listening.
