Re-Purposed on Purpose!
I am a happy recycler. I know that making new clothing has a massive environmental footprint. It can take more than 5,000 gallons of water to manufacture just a T-shirt and a pair of jeans. I make a conscious effort to avoid Fast Fashion and my husband and I can put all of our clothing into just one closet. I also purchase most of my clothing from thrift stores, and I always send my good quality clothing to the thrift store when done.
But I was oblivious to the waste that clothing and other materials create when discarded. It first came to my attention just how much clothing is purchased and tossed away when I watched a foreign movie. The protagonist lost an important piece of clothing, and fearing it was tossed in the recycle bin went to a warehouse where mountains of recycled clothing was stored. I am not exaggerating when I say mountains. It dawned on me that in my ignorance I assumed that all recycled clothing ended up in a thrift store, purchased and then happily worn again.
The truth is that even though Americans only recycle about 15 percent of their clothing, there is still more recycled clothing than the thrift stores can handle. Some thrifts sell their overflow to overseas merchants, or textilers who recycle. Some just throw the overflow away. When you add soiled or damaged clothing about 10.5 million tons of textiles goes into landfills each year.
I know that I am simply a small business owner, a crafter who just wants to make a doll or two and pass on my joy of handmade and one-of-a-kind treasures. Many of my friends make their environmental statement by crafting with organic materials. I decided to make my impact by re-purposing as much material as possible, keeping more waste out of the landfills one torn and ratty pair of blue jeans at a time. I also decided to make my own filling for my dolls by cutting all of my scraps into small pieces and using this to stuff my creations. It actually makes my dolls heavier and sturdier, so boys and girls can play hard with their Super friends.
This is why my I proudly display all of my re-purposed materials in my item descriptions. Thank you for supporting my cause. To read more, here are some inciteful links:
Again, thank you for supporting my small business, and all small businesses on Etsy and in your community. You make this possible.
