Announcement
North Star Alpacas creates handspun and millspun alpaca yarn, alpaca roving, raw alpaca and sheep fleece, and handmade items from my own alpacas. Some alpaca is as soft as cashmere and most is warmer and stronger than wool, making it a knitter's or crocheter's dream. Besides all this, alpaca will felt to a delightful, soft, fuzzy fabric.

Doing What I Love
I'm 79 and so fortunate to be fairly healthy and doing just what I want in my Retirement. In the spring of 2018, I learned that I have breast cancer, but I'm doing well.
I'm eager to get up in the morning and get to the barn to feed and clean up after my 13 alpacas and 1 mini horse. Most of the income from my sales goes right back into caring for my 4 leggeds.
I love working with my fleeces. I wash, dye, pick, card, and spin the gorgeous fleece that the alpacas and sheep grow for me. Some of my fleece is sent to Zeilinger's mill in Frankenmuth, Michigan to be made into roving. Zs also spin my sock yarn. The yarn is then sent on to Northland Woolands in Minnesota to be knit into socks. Some of my fleece is also sent to Stonehedge in East Jordan, Michigan, to be made into my yarn that is listed in my shop as mill spun.
I do like to knit but get very bored easily so keep my projects brief, thus my fondness for making hats. It's very difficult for me to make two of the same thing,
My husband died 12 years ago and I have learned that I can manage most of the farm work by myself. After he died, I sold my breeding girls because the birthing was stressful for me by myself. I'm now a fiber farm,
Like my son says, I'm lucky to be doing something that I love that actually pays for itself.
In the fall of 2015, I was contacted by the PBS show called A Craftsman's Legacy to produce a half hour show called The Yarn Spinner (Season 3, Episode 2). You can probably find it on the PBS station that you watch. You can go here to view the short preview video to visit my barn, Eric (the host), and myself. - http://craftsmanslegacy.com/episodes/season_3/Episode-2
