Wood Is Good

Hi! Thanks for stopping by. We're Lisa and Francis, the hands and hearts behind Noteworthy Design Co.

Working with wood brings me back to my childhood. The nostalgia is so strong that I'm nearly launched back dozens of years. A youngster again, spending time with Grandpa in his wood shop. This is where I learned to work with equipment safely. Where I learned to measure 3 times and cut once, and most importantly that handmade, artisan goods contained so much more than met the eye. I heard stories of the 'old country' of Italy while Grandpa worked.

This was a man who loved to tell me stories. My heart shattered when his mind began to battle with Alzheimer's disease. His deep brown eyes lost their welcoming twinkle and with that, Frank lost the ability to verbalize his stories and succumbed to this disease 7 years after it began. The woodworking would be put on hold for many years, until the right time came along.

When my husband and I purchased our heritage home we began an extreme restoration project to bring this 120 year old home back to life. Along the way, we found some treasures from the souls who lived their lives in within these walls. In an unfinished, 5'10" crawl space, was the remnants of an old woodworker's shop. Amongst the rubble in this space was 70's (and earlier) vintage equipment, old pinned scroll saw blades, vintage hammers and letters and words that had been crafted by the artisan who worked in this shop.

Within the neighbourhood, we began to notice the handiwork of this gentleman. House numbers and signs made in his style out of scroll sawed wood, mounted on planks of wood. Some were painted and some were raw wood.

Francis has been doing finish carpentry for the better part of 2 decades and I jokingly told him that he would be the next woodworker to build in this crawl space. (Keep in mind, he is nearly 6 feet tall and cannot stand up completely, unless he stands in between the beams) His words... No. :|

But we were inspired by the work we saw in our neighborhood. I said, we could bring this art back. Modern flair added to this 70's style. We went ahead and purchased a commercial grade scroll saw and started creating. Much to his chagrin, Francis did start working in this crawl space where he could only stand between the beams. :)

These were our humble beginnings, and now Francis and I both work full time crafting our signage. We work with businesses and individuals creating custom pieces for both interior and exterior use. I take care of the design work and all finishing details while Francis works in his shop. (Not so much in that crawl space anymore) ;)
