Synesthesia art that captures the vibrancy of music

Synesthesia is the rare experience of crossed senses in which the experience of a sensation or idea triggers an associated experience. People around the world experience synesthesia is a range of ways, often without realizing their experience is unique. A synesthete may be able to taste a word, see personalities in letters or hear colour. People with synesthesia experience these crossed associations as part of everyday life and they often go unnoticed until an unexpected conversation brings a revelation.

Inspired by art through youth, it wasn’t until her twenties that Sigourney discovered her experience of music was shared by less that 1% of the population. Inspired by the many wonderful conversations on music and experience that followed, Sigourney directed her studio practice to focus on synesthesia art.

ABOUT SIGOURNEY

Sigourney grew up in Melbourne, Australia and has found homes across the world before setting up her current studio in York. As a child she travelled often to visit family in the USA and some of her earliest memories are of her grandfather’s art studio - a large, vibrant space in the red Arizona desert. This space, scattered with paint and brushes, seemed a magical world, and Sigourney has been dreaming of it ever sense.

Sigourney’s art is interested in capturing the memories and emotions evoked by music, translated through her synesthetic experience of each sound. Informed by her family’s artistic tradition, she works primarily with watercolour, refining techniques to express the flow and movement of water and music. New works include studies in acrylics and oil pastels as she seeks to explore and share the layers and textures of the synesthetic experience. The drive to share this rare experience and bring viewers into her world is at the heart of each work, conveying each instrument, tone and sound through colours, textures and written companion pieces to each work.

Sigourney is currently working on commissions and developing original new work and prints to share the vibrant world of synesthesia. Aside from commissioning your own artwork, you can also follow her colourful experience on Instagram.

ABOUT THE ART

I paint, exploring the trail of stories and memories that music evokes within us, and to connect those moments through art. Music, poems, a loved one’s voice; all leave colours throughout our lives and shared moments.

By creating pieces with movement, colour and the subtle interplay of pigments across the paper, I create a translation of what I see when I listen to music. Each colour and texture corresponds to my synesthetic experience, moment to moment, during the song. This means that each piece can be read across the paper as though listening to the music.

Working with watercolour, each work is a reflection of a unique song or recording. Before any painting begins I sketch a composition. From this sketch a colour palette emerges and then translated using brushes, fingers and a variety of techniques to control the ebb and flow of the paints and water.

I include a written accompaniment to each piece to make the translation complete. Each piece ultimately seeks to give a glimpse of synesthetic awareness and provide a visual manifestation of the memories and stories evoked through music.

Frequently asked questions
I have more questions!

I have a whole page dedicated to FAQs on my website! I cover everything from how the pieces are created, whether I offer discounts (hint: I do!) and recommendations on how to frame your piece. Check out the full FAQ list at: http://synesthesia.art/faqs

What sizes do you paint?

I create pieces in a variety of sizes to suit every space and budget. Each size is double the size of the one before. A great trick to get a sense of the sizes is to start with a standard A4 piece of paper. Double it for A3 and halve it for A5!

The following sizes are available for immediate purchase in the shop. Please contact me if you would like a larger piece.

- 4×6 inches (A6)
- 6×8 inches (A5)
- 8×10 inches (A4)
- 11×16 inches (A3)
- 16×23 inches (A2)

Can I know the colours of the song before you paint it?

Absolutely, I’m happy to let you know the colours you can expect to see in your painting. Visit the FREEBIES page of my website to send me your song! http://synesthesia.art/freebies

How should I frame my artwork?

You are welcome to frame your piece in any way that suits your home and style. I recommend framing your piece with a mat so that the glass does not sit directly on the artwork.

IKEA offers a number of frames that are suitable. I recommend both the HOVSTA and RIBBA frames. These are usually available in a variety of finishes. My personal favourite is the HOVSTA frame as it gives you the option to frame with more depth or closer to the front.

Copyright

All artwork is copyright and original to Sigourney Young. Sigourney Young retains all permissions and rights to the images, including custom works. Synesthetic descriptions of each piece are the creative property of Sigourney Young and should not be replicated or reproduced.

All photos of artwork and the studio are the property of Sigourney Young unless otherwise credited.

Artworks are inspired by unique songs based on Sigourney Young’s synesthetic experience. All music that inspires these pieces are copyrights of the performer, writer, composer and/or record label. The music used to create these pieces is accessed through channels that respect the copyright of the artist.

What is your processing time?

All pieces are created and shipped within 2-6 business days. After placing your order you will be contacted within 24 hours to let you know the exact date I’ll have your piece in the post. Any changes to processing times will be noted on each product listing during peak periods.

Gifting soon? I’ve created a free printable art card that is perfect for gifting while your piece is in transit. The card includes a brief explanation of synesthesia and will let the recipient know that the piece is on its way. Once the piece is in the post I will also send through a sneak peek of your painting. The art card, printed along with the sneak peek is a popular gifting option. Download the art card here: http://synesthesia.art/art-card

How do you create the artwork?

I create my artwork based on my synesthesia experience of each song. I listen to the song dozens of times and begin with a sketch of the song. I sketch the shape and colours of the song sequentially and create a colour palette for the painting. I then prepare archive quality paper and paints and create your piece. I also write a certificate of authenticity to go along with each painting that describes my experience of the song and how each section and colour corresponds to the music. You can view the full process in the video here: http://synesthesia.art/about

What is the difference between the abstract and sequential styles

Your piece can be painted in two styles. Both capture the colours of your song beautifully and examples of each style can be found in the archive.

Sequential - The sequential style, painted in the ‘backward s’ shape allows me to show the progress of the music sequentially. The music begins on the top left and flows down through the painting allowing for greater detail and viewers to follow through my synesthesia experience as the music flows.

Abstract - The abstract style, painted in a looser, dynamic shape allows me to show the energy of the music as well as the key colours of the song. The dominant sounds of the music come through across the abstract composition and allows viewers to see a snapshot of my synesthesia experience.
