the busy little tree rat

Nuttier Than A Squirrel ♥ Handmade in New Orleans, LA

I'm anxious. If I had a totem animal, it would be a squirrel. This is not by choice, because I am pretty sure that they are the hairy version of rats.

Some time back, I made a few acorn earrings for my mom and sisters. They loved them, so I sold a few extra pairs to others during the holidays. I have a formal art degree (and now a Master’s in Anthropology, but we won’t talk about that), so I was a little reluctant to start making “crafty earrings”. But folks thought that they were the cutest things EVER…and kept insisting that I carry a line of my jewelry in their shops. So I gave in slowly…

Fast forward a bit. I've made tweaks to the process and have refined my process. My acorns are well made and designed with durability in mind. I also offer hand embossed earring cards (for my displays), gift boxes, and business cards.

I start by collecting real acorn cupules ("lids" or "caps" or "hats"). The cupules get cleaned up and then roasted a little to add a nice golden color. A durable clear coating is added to enhance the natural beauty of the acorn and to protect it from normal wear.

For earrings, each lid is paired with another that is similar. Those are strung with natural stone, mineral, or wooden beads (i.e., jasper, tiger's eye, malachite, etc.), which are also paired for coloration. I'm a fanatic about details and each earring is paired as closely as possible (some would call that perfectionism but I call it 'squirrelly').

I use sterling silver or niobium (a hypoallergenic alloy) ear wires. Pendants are hung on a waxed hemp cord (with a handmade clasp by Uruz Metals - www.etsy.com/shop/uruzmetals) or an Italian 18" silver foxtail chain (sterling silver plated in fine silver). Some of these chains are antiqued with a non-toxic patina.

My work is made from found, natural objects and built into wearable keepsakes. The materials I use have character and are inherently unique, and that is what I enjoy about working and creating with them. Although each object is described and photographed to the best of my ability, the sourcing of natural acorn cupules and stone/mineral beads often lends to each product bearing unique marks from Mother Nature.

I collect, create, photograph, and market everything all by myself. I guess I’m a bit of a Renaissance woman. Or maybe a busy little squirrel. And I drink lots, and lots of coffee.
