About

Nyaka Grandmothers caring for AIDS Orphans in Uganda breaking the cycle of poverty by selling their handmade baskets, jewelry, and other goods.

We work with 7,004 Grannies who are caring for 43,000 Orphans in Uganda. These women are the unsung heroes of the AIDS epidemic, working hard and raising their grandchildren in a time in their life when they should be the ones being cared for.

Grannies in 92 Granny Groups make beautiful woven baskets, bowls, trivets, hats, purses, paper bead jewelry, and other crafts using natural resources and supplies that they are able to purchase thanks to the micro-finance loans that we are able to provide them. In turn, we buy the crafts from the Grandmothers at a fair price and then sell them through basket parties, our Etsy shop, and in stores. All of the profits raised from the Grannies' handiwork go right back into the Grandmother Programs which work to educate and empower these hard working Grandmothers; women who have tragically lost their own children to AIDS and are now raising their orphaned grandchildren, and others from the community, without social security, health care, retirement, child welfare, or basic housing.

In addition to providing a marketplace to sell their wares, we also provide these Grannies with education on improved agriculture, vocational skills, leadership training, grief counseling, Importance of HIV/AIDS Testing and treatment, basic medical care, business skills, and accounting for micro finance loans. As often as we can we also provide micro finance loans, pit latrines, smokeless kitchens, safe homes, water harvesting tanks, and more. Most importantly though, we have been able to restore hope in these women's lives, when it was all but lost.
