Cracker Jack Treasures

Cracker Jack Treasures

I was raised on the Namekagan River in Northern Wisconsin eating Cracker Jacks and soaking up the natural world around me like a lizard soaks up sun. Nature fed my soul, and my mother taught me at an early age how to use nature’s bounty to make lye soap, perfumes, how to sew and work hard. She always said that if I tried hard enough at anything, I could eventually figure it out and so I did. I could make my own sewing patterns at 8 years old!

But it was my love of the Cracker Jack prize that would eventually lead to my true passion. I’d get so excited about that little prize in each box. My favorites were the little sticky alphabet letters. I loved collecting them and making words with them. I truly treasured them.

I made my first sign almost 40 years ago. I took an old piece of wood and hand painted it for a friend of mine for her baby. The baby came early and was born with Down Syndrome and a cleft pallet. The sign simply read “Danny, The Angels Danced the Day You Were Born”. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house that day at her baby shower. To this day my friend displays that sign proudly on her wall along with picture of her precious baby boy. It was at that moment I realized how important a simple gesture like that could be. Making signs was easy after that.

And that leads me back to the Cracker Jack treasure. I believe we’re all born with our gifts and taught over time to not pay attention. So, in the back of my mind all of these years have been “cracker jack treasures” that I’ve been collecting and collecting, waiting to make something beautiful. From those early days sewing with my momma, to seeing the comfort in my friend’s eyes because of one hand painted sign, I knew that a few little words, a simple phrase, could become someone’s treasure, just like the Cracker Jack surprise.

So I began selling my signs online after I retired in 2004, and moved to Etsy in 2011. I was one of the very first hand painted sign makers on Etsy. I've gotten many request for custom signs, one sticks out in my mind, a request from a young woman for a sign that said, “We love your bald head!” I made the sign, didn't ask questions, after she received it she told me that her dad had lost his hair due to chemo treatments and he’d been self-conscious of his hair loss. The gift made him both laugh and cry, he told her it was the most thoughtful gift ever.

Over the years I’ve created soft sculpture folk art that has gone all over the world, I had success with my family and in the business world, but it is these little signs, with simple phrases painted on them; these signs that capture Cracker Jack treasures in time, that are my greatest accomplishment.

Many Blessings from the Northwoods,
