Announcement   I just listed 4 new patterns in a medium size to get you inspired for spring and summer! I have several more nearly ready. Take a look!

I'm hoping to be on the road more to vend at Midwestern hook-ins and be available to teach. Hooking is really an open world of possibilities. So many patterns, so many colors and wool choices and then throw in techniques to use in innovative ways. I never tire of the possibilities. Please check out my fledgling website:www.oldfriendswoolens.com It's live and getting so close to being done. It's linked to my etsy shop but the website has other info as well. Thanks.

I've also been asked back to the wonderful Duluth Rug School, held in September 2017. It is such a wonderful camp. I've been a teacher there for three years and I've also gone as a student to soak up the creative atmosphere and connect with my hooker friends. The camp is put on by the Duluth Arrowhead Hookcrafters Guild and I'll be posting more info as I get it.

I do have some new designs on the table, ready to transfer so please, do check back this month and see what's up.

My goal is to design and create more art for this primitive rug hooking that I love so much. My expectations were that it would be a piece of cake. My reality is that daily life and household/farm upkeep have crept into "my" hours to create and I have let myself be fooled into thinking that my art isn't really a legit thing. This is bad. I plan to overcome! Designs are coming! Rug patterns and wool, the things of delight. I had forgotten to do what makes my heart sing. I think leaving a day job had numbed me to this but I'm waking up. I'm learning again. I'm coming back to life.

***I've enlarged my Leaf and Berry Mat to a nice medium sized mat-26x34". It's a fun design to hook in your favorite color palette.

***I've added another NEW PATTERN, called Prairie Spirit. It's a large 38x66" primitive peregrine falcon pattern, with prairie roses and junipers and a very cool scallop border. My pal, Jean Bartel envisioned this rug as a gift to her recently retired husband, Ted, as he was involved in a peregrine introduction program on the Mayo Clinic campus in downtown Rochester, MN. The photos of Jean's version of the pattern are gorgeous! Not everyone is willing to hook such a biggie so I'm working on a smaller size and Jean has offered to hook it for me as a Bald Eagle. Stay tuned...:)

****I've added a NEW PATTERN, Spring Fling, and I just love it! It's a simple prim design of mine and it goes together quickly! It's a prim because it is drawn without trying to get it perfectly perfect. I love that. I love the look of the old rugs that are drawn without a fine art/graphic art degree to get the design done. It just makes me happy to look at it and I think you'd really love it in your own color plan. Pick a favorite color for the center and go from there!

ALSO NEW** Many people have asked for a color plan to go with my Deco Garden rug pattern. I do have one available and it will be included with the pattern, along with photos to help you accomplish the color plan.

NEW ITEM! I've just listed 2 wonderful primitive hooks, modeled after the fabulous Ritchie hooks imported from England. These recreated hooks look and feel just like the Ritchie hook that I use and I'm so happy to be able to offer them. They are created by a Midwest artisan, using the 8mm primitive Ritchie hook as the model, since Ritchie hooks are not longer being produced. Look for them in my listings. They are so great to hook with! These are so much lighter than some of the brass shank primitive hooks. They are so comfortable to use.

I'll be listing more wool for sale soon. I have numerous tubs of hand dyed wool, just waiting to be appliqued or hooked. Check back when you can!

About

Noodling Life into Rugs

I've always been drawn to color, line and contrast, as far back as I can remember. I remember colors. I don't remember numbers or facts very well, but I do remember colors. I love fabric and drawing and sketching, so when Jill Rotterman taught me to hook, everything came together for me in this one hand craft. I designed my own patterns from inspirations I'd been saving and more and more people asked me to draw a pattern for them with specific elements. There's no end to what patterns can be drawn for hooking and I just love that! One design will spawn another and then another...

I have many designs yet to load and yet to put down on paper so have patience with me! I see pattern elements everywhere. I'm not a fine artist but I do love primitive rug hooking and coming up with new designs and combinations. I hope you'll find something you like enough to hook or punch for yourself.

    Owner, Designer

Cathy started primitive rug hooking in 1998 and discovered that primitive rug hooking combines all her favorite creative things: design, color, texture, and fiber. She teaches primitive hooking and continues to see new design ideas everywhere.

  • Jean Bartel

Jean is a dear friend who is a much faster rug hooker than I am. She hooks samples for me when she can. I appreciate her generosity so much

Shop policies

Welcome to my shop! I love, love design, wool, and rug hooking. I have many, many designs yet to be loaded and I hope you will enjoy looking and stop back often to see what is new. When the moment hits me, I will offer some of my wool therapy pieces for sale, as a finished woolen item, usually one of a kind. I have a deep love of color, wool, animals, flowers, and family, not necessarily in that order. I have 12 years of rug hooking experience and this fiber art fills all of my art needs.
