this is a liberation effort.

I come from a rural town in northern Wisconsin, a friendly place of only about 500 folks, most of them born and raised and never left. The 11 students I started pre-Kindergarten with in 1994 were the same friends I stood with on graduation day. People grow and the outside world has it's influence, but things mostly stay the same in my sleepy home town.

When the long-standing school librarian retired, she was replaced by a much younger woman. Within a few weeks of her arrival, things did begin to change. In my many-a wanderings down the school's one long hallway, I began to notice stacks of vintage library books lining the walls of larger classrooms. Boxes stacked in corners. It took a few passes through to realize the markings. "Rubbish." "Trash."

You don't say?

With the help of some like-minded individuals, I smuggled these humble books, many the same that I'd enjoyed during my childhood, into the back seat of my car over a period of a few weeks, knowing full well that they had not yet seen the end of their days. A few months previous, I'd taught myself to bookbind using online tutorials and the help of a kind and nimble-fingered friend. The books found refuge at my home, tagged along with me to university and eventually found their place in the spotlight here at mindful fibres.

I am a firm believer in repurposing, recycling, and art as a process, rather than a product. All items that live here were rescued, inspired and created with versatility, sustainability and future generations in mind. These values are deeply important to me, and one small way in which I express them is through recycling and upcycling materials into new, useable items.

Everything I create is something old in its root: old book covers or pages, junk mailers, magazines, worn out fabric. It’s an exercise in saving my sanity some days, but mostly stems from a deep affection for the planet I live on, and the wish to vocalize my commitment to future generations: In our actions, we should be mindful and consider the maintenance of our planet for our coming relatives.

Sometimes that means we should house refugee books; we should liberate them from the landfill.

Greetings! I am the one-woman show behind mindful fibres. I am also a graduate student at a state university in Minnesota and a frequent visitor of public libraries. Books are an enormous part of my every day and it is a healthy, happy relationship.

İBienvenidos! Willkommen! Welcome to mindful fibres! This shop is home to handbound books, jewelry and paper goods made from scrap materials.

The journals featured in this shop are created from upcycled fabrics, papers, and repurposed published books. I like to finish my part in making journals in a way that lets you, the owner, customize and complete the process in a way that is personal and meaningful to you (if you so wish). I imagine them as pocket or knapsack travelers, places not just for words and ideas but keepsakes, too.

mindful fibres' paper arts line was birthed from the wish to utilize the scraps created from binding journals and print culture. It is largely inspired by nature, geometry and wit.

The wearable items found in this shop are the result of an effort to repurpose paper-waste stemming from bulk mailers/advertisements, old magazines and packaging materials. They are an exercise in finding beauty and meaning in commercialism, consumer culture and "junk;" they explore one alternative life for what would otherwise call the rubbish bin it's home.

Accepted payment methods

Returns and exchanges
If you're not happy with your purchase, please contact me so we can find the best possible solution for both parties. :)
