About OmegaGlassArt

Sales 236
On Etsy since 2008

A mother pushed (willingly) into fusing glass by her daughter finds herself creating bright, colorful artwork that cheers the heart.

My daughter, Wendy, is to blame for all of this. Several years ago, I was teaching high school English, looking for a creative outlet that didn't involve reading student essays. Wendy said, "Why don't we fuse glass?" And I said, "Sounds like fun!" See, she had learned how to do it years ago in high school. So I bought a kiln, we stockpiled a bunch of tools and glass, we turned part of my basement into our studio, and we began. About two years ago, she got a job with Amazon, so now I'm on my own, waiting for a time when Wendy has time again to feed the artist within.

Glass is a great medium to work with, as long as you don't mind cutting yourself now and then. We work with it cold, thus eliminating the fearful huge fire and molten glass of glassblowing. It works a bit like ceramics. We construct our pieces, put them into a kiln, program a fusing cycle, and pull it out about 24 hours later. Often, we do more to the glass and put it in for another firing.

Sometimes we create glass pieces together (we are currently creating 1/2" blocks of clear glass tiles for my own bathroom), and sometimes separately. But we love sitting side by side, Wendy creating her frit trees, sculptures, and pristine bowls, while I create my whimsical dogs and cats, crow paintings, and fused glass boxes.

One of our favorite things to create is glass tiles for our customers' homes. Wendy and I both love HGTV (we are a bit addicted), so when we are asked to make tiles that will become a permanent part of someone's bathroom or kitchen, we get all giddy.

I feel privileged to create art and offer it to others. My art tends toward the bright and whimsical because it feeds my spirit despite Seattle's rain. I'm inspired by artists like Klimt, the intrigue of nature, and Craftsman era colors and lines.
