We also work with Alpaca weavers and knitters. To bring those fine elements from the Andes to you. All traditional ways.
Onanya came about through the interest in textile design being a spiritual art and a language.
I started ONANYA in 2007. Moving to the Big Island of Hawaii, where there's not many jobs in 2002. I decided to learn to sow to make clothes and sell them. With time my designs took off, and I couldn't keep up with the demand. I wanted to make more intricate patterns and prints that I couldn't do on my own. So I went to Bali in 2005 where I met Ayu Tirta and together we found a production house that would help me create my line. This is where we met Yogi and family. We have been working with them for many years. They offer a great space for their workers and the wages are fair. Something that was very important for me to offer as part of my line.
In 2008, I was called to adventure into the Peruvian Amazon, because I was very involved with Shamanism. The medicine brought me to the Shipibo Tribe and their luminous art, and we started to create magic on our clothing. Adding the beautiful designs of the Shipibo Conibo people onto newer more contemporary designs. Observing the need of these tribal communities have, and the displacement they were experiencing because of the lack of work. ONANYA offers a solution to keep their traditions alive and still stay home living their lives. We work with many women, from the village of San Francisco de Yarinacocha. We offer Fair Trade feees for their work. You can feel the love and the magic when you wear one of our pieces.
In 2014, I moved to Peru to learn more about Andean Textiles. This is where we bring the Alpaca weaving and garments from. I help design the pieces, and the Master Weavers do their magic.
All of ONANYA's work is a Vision Seed that starts in me, but without the tribal art that embellishes our pieces it would just be another clothing line. We bring you the REAL DEAL, we make sure the items that have tribal characteristics are made by the true people and their lineage! There is No cultural appropriation here, only Fusion and Community!
Thank you for supporting all the people that ONANYA brings together!
