Puftaloon (as he's called) arrived safe and sound after a rather naughty excursion to the Orient. He looked completely splendid emerging form his cardboard cocoon. One Friend's Heirloom Coat Became a Business

Some years back, a friend put an all-points request out for anyone he knew to make him a teddy bear. His grandmother's fur coat was in the attic, being eaten by the mice. He decided it needed to be recused from the hunger mice, brought out, and made into something he could put on a shelf to admire, and remember his grandmother. I took up the challenge. A couple weeks later, he was thrilled to bring home a grandmother bear and her small cub, using every part of the coat - fur, lining, buttons and snaps.

I liked the whole idea of the coat-turned-bears. When another friend's mother was in hospice and her daughter was nearing her first birthday, I offered a pair of bears made from the eldest's clothing as a gift. They would be something the youngest and eldest had to share when they visited and something to treasure when she passed. The two bears became four as other family members wanted some as well. From there the Once Again Bears were born.

Today, I not only make bears from people's treasures, but also from old clothing and textiles that can no longer be used. They are things headed for the shredded or, worse yet, the land fills! Each new item has its own character. Every bear has its own unique personality with a story to tell.

No one can remember exactly when Heather started sewing with a hand needle and a piece of her mother's scrap fabric. A teddy bear lover for just as long, she now takes great joy in creating her own huggable treasures on the sewing machine.
