Making the familiar and everyday into the unusual and strange.
Hello! I'm a photographer and maker based in Hobart, Tasmania. As a photographer I'm interested in letting chance, light and chemistry be my collaborators.
I love analogue processes but I'm not a fan of the single-use nature of most analogue photography equipment. 35mm film canisters are especially hard to recycle, as they contain steel and plastic, and are not worth recycling companies taking them apart. This means they end up in landfill. I'm trying to do something about that in a small way, by upcycling them into striking, one-of-a-kind earrings. 35mm film used to be ubiquitous, from the supermarket to the pharmacy, and these earrings are conversation starters for anyone who remembers the 20th century! I get my supplies from local photo labs, where I still get my film processed.
My interests and art practice extend well beyond photography into maps, books and paper, and I make origami objects that disrupt our expectations of space and story. They're a bit hard to sell online so you can see them on Instagram (@orbmaker) and at various local artisan fairs in Hobart. This stuff keeps me out of mischief on Tasmania's chilly winter evenings.
I'm a photographer with a passion for analogue processes, and a concern for their environmental impact. My art practice and jewellery are focussed on transforming materials into new roles and rethinking their original purpose.
