About

From little pebbles...

I work from a small studio at the foot of the Malvern Hills (made from the oldest rocks in the world), designing and making strung jewellery with semi-precious and raw untreated precious gemstones.

My family of very outdoorsy rock climbers gave me an early appreciation of nature generally and rocks and minerals specifically. I always had a rock collection on display, and often one in my pocket as an amulet. I love the magical patterns, textures and colours that nature creates.

A few years ago I brought back a collection of beach pebbles from the Greek island of Ithaca with the intention of creating beads. It really was a 'world in a grain of sand' moment, as I connected to my inner poet's love of art and metaphor. From this a whole learning curve ensued. A close friend then told me about Etsy, and here I am.

I continue to learn about gemstones, their science and provenance and I am constantly exploring new techniques and designs for creating strung jewellery. I love finding out how strung jewellery has developed across history and other cultures, and how it continues to evolve. I love exploring the inspirational meanings, stories and metaphors attributed to crystals, beads and patterns. For example the word ‘bead’ itself comes from the Old English word ‘bede’ meaning prayer. There is so much more to discover and adapt into new creations.

I am delighted that my collection is at last large enough to host a real life stall, and I have started to sell at local art and craft fairs. It is very exciting meeting customers face-to-face and to learn from their reactions, and I'm looking forward to lots more.

Hi and welcome to my little shop. I'm Mhari - pronounced Vari- as in Ovari's - it's old Scottish. That's me in the picture. I design and make, photograph and list all the jewellery here, and every piece is unique.
