About

A natural, simple way to keep house and body.

Before my youngest son was born, I decided that I wanted to start living more naturally. I learned how to make soap, laundry soap, his cloth diaper rash cream, etc. Six years later, I try to incorporate healthy, simple, natural ways of living in to our every day lives-from what we eat, to what we wear, to what we have in our home. Keeping synthetic chemicals out and using what God has given us is important to me. I am learning that Young Living's therapeutic grade essential oils are an important part of our home, that non-GMO foods are critical and that finding local, fresh food is such a blessing.

My Owl Naturals products are what we use in our home. I hope they bless you, as they have blessed us. if you are looking for something special or have any questions, please message me. I will help you in any way that I can.

Additional policies and FAQs
FAQs:

Do you have other Etsy shops?
Yes, simplehousewares is my other shop. There I sell fabulous vintage finds. I will discount shipping on items from that shop if you would like to combine products with your owlnaturals purchase. Just let me know and I will change the invoice for you.

Where does your beeswax come from?
My local honey man provides me with wonderful, high quality beeswax, honey and propolis. It has a fabulous, sweet honey scent.

Why beeswax candles instead of soy or paraffin?
Beeswax is an all natural product made by bees. In keeping things simple and natural, I would much rather use what is local and easily obtained than soy that has to be planted, harvested, shipped, etc. or paraffin that is a chemical byproduct of the oil industry. Beeswax also burns brighter, longer, cleaner and naturally emit negative ions which clean the air and invigorate the body.

Someone told me lye (sodium hydroxide) is a dangerous chemical - is this true?
All cold process, handmade soap, has been made using lye. Whether a listing says "sodium hydroxide or saponified oils of...," etc. Lye has been used.

It takes a lye/ water mixture combined with oils for saponification to happen. Before I started making soap, I felt just like you. How in the world can I use something made with lye to clean my body and my children's? I use soap, vinegar and baking soda to clean my home, so anything harsh is of no interest to me.

That was my biggest hesitation in starting to make soap. I wanted to make an all natural soap for my family and found no way around it but to use lye. When I researched melt and pour bases, they contained way too many ingredients for me. Here is a sample of a white melt and pour base that I found online:
Ingredients: Propylene Glycol, Sorbitol, Glycerin, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Stearate, Sodium Myristate, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Triethanolamine, Water, Titanium Dioxide.

I like to use products on my skin that contain ingredients that I am familiar with and are natural. Melt and pour bases typically come no where close to my comfort level. So, that being said, I started to consider lye based soap. My research led me to the fact that if a lye calculator is used to include the proper amount of lye in a mixture and the soap is given a long enough cure time...then an all natural product results.

It is like being in a chemistry class to understand it all. But: Fatty Acid (oil) + Base (lye) = “A Salt” (soap). I let the cut soap bars rest for at least four weeks so that they have time to cure properly so that no lye is left in them and it has time to convert properly. This is a great site to explain it furrther...http://www.realhandmadesoap.com/folders/FAQ/choose.htm.

I don’t use a melt and pour base…Melt and pour makes it sound like there is no lye, but there was lye in the original soap that the glycerin was pulled from. As seen in goplanetearth.com's "pure & natural soap base" that contains: Palm glycerine, Saponified palm oils (palm stearic acid, sodium hydroxide (lye) and vegetable oleic acid), purified deionized water. “

How do you make sure your soap is safe and gentle?
My research has led me to formulate batches of soap that are made of ingredients to moisturize, cleanse or exfoliate the skin. My soap will be fully cured when you receive it.

How can I contact you?
Just send me a conversation on Etsy or you can email me at: owlnaturals(at)gmail.com.

Do you accept wholesale orders?
Yes, just message me or send me an email so we can chat about your needs.:)

Are your soaps eco-friendly?
Yes, they are environmentally friendly and biodegradable. Unlike detergent bars made commercially, my soap does not contribute excess phosphates to the environment that cause over growth of algae.

My soap is made with herbs, flowers, carrier oils and essential oils that are natural, but affect people in different ways. Please do your own research as to how these ingredients may affect you.

Everything in my shop is handmade, so there may be variations in color, shapes and/or textures. Please understand that the item you purchase may arrive to you with slight differences than what is pictured on the listing.
