About

Exciting and unusual fibre blends

I decided to start Owl of Athena Fibre Arts to sell the things I love spinning and knitting. I want to offer blends that inspire and engage fibre artists – something just a bit out of the usual. I love working with new fibre blends and I’m so inspired by all the possible combinations. At the present time I have two ranges of fibre blends available: the Olympians range – 12 blends named for each of the major ancient Greek Gods; and the Nymphs range – 5 blends named for some of the ancient Greek nymphs, usually spirits or minor deities of a specific location or natural element. I hope you’ll enjoy browsing through the blends in the shop.

One of my other aims in starting the shop was to offer some blends of fibre that would be great for socks. I love to spin for socks and often there aren’t that many fibres which are appropriate for socks. Most spinners have their own criteria for sock fibre – I’ve aimed to offer a range of fibre blends in the hope that there will be something for everyone. Some are softer, some are more hard wearing – I hope you will find something that calls your name. As always spinning and knitting technique have a huge influence on the resilience of a sock yarn, so please keep this in mind if you are spinning for and knitting socks.

Where are all the classical names from?
I named the shop Owl of Athena because of my love of classical mythology and because during my undergraduate degree I majored in Classical Studies. The Owl is one of Athena’s symbols and Athena – as well as being the goddess of War – is also the goddess of handcrafts! (This explains why you really shouldn’t get in someone’s way when there’s knitting or spinning or crafting on the cards)
