Soap and History

History intrigues me, especially Alabama history. When I decided to open this store, I remembered one story in particular my mother would always recall and that was the tale of her grandmother sitting in the yard with a fire pit scraping homemade lye from a metal container. After a long day of obtaining the lye, she would make soap for the family out of lard and herbs from her country garden.

In my great grandmother's generation, it was not uncommon for country families to make soap for themselves, but sometimes it was also made for profit. This was the inspiration for the name "Vintage Soap Wagon." Most of the time it was children who were sent pulling a wagon full of handmade soap into the town square selling bars to the public while the parents stayed home doing daily chores or working in the fields. My how times have changed.

Truly soap has come a long way since the late 1800s and early 1900s, but the principles of cold process soap are still the same. Lye is needed to bond with a carrier oil (or oils) and the saponification process still has to take place to make a rich lathering bar of soap. With so many preservatives and processed chemicals in store bought soap today, I find it a worthy and gratifying hobby making healthy wholesome soap from scratch with natural ingredients. I honestly believe it would make my great grandmother proud.
