I can't say enough positive things about my experience! Soo is friendly, patient, and attentive, and she clearly takes pride in her work. She made sure the engagement ring she was custom-designing was exactly how I wanted. It is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!! I have had it for two months and still can't stop admiring it. Thank you so much, Soo!

About

A journey from Korea, New York, and now New Orleans!

This is my story I wrote (... well with help of my husband) for "Featured Shop" on The Etsy Blog:

Hello. My actual name is Yeonsoo but ever since I have lived in the United States I have gone by Soo. I was born and raised in South Korea. I studied textiles as well as furniture design in Seoul and New York City respectively. I worked in New York City for many years as a furniture and interior designer where I met my architect husband. We eventually moved to my husband’s native New Orleans and I opened my Etsy store called pale fish! My brother came up with that name years ago when he came to visit me in New York and found himself helping me with an all nighter charrette for a deadline. He told me I was like a pale fish, pale for having not seen the sun for days. The fish part can be explained by an Korean expression that literally translates as “a fish that met water.” It refers to a fish that is in water is most comfortable, the opposite of the English expression “fish out of water.” My brother, while poking fun at my predicament, was telling me that I was good at what I was doing. I loved the name and it stuck.

I knew I always wanted to design jewelry. In Korea, when two people get engaged, both families exchange a suitcase full of jewelry pieces as part of the wedding gifts, almost like a dowry only less compulsory. Mothers often start assembling the pieces of jewelry or gemstones for the future wedding gift as early as the kids' teen years. My mother proudly showed my siblings and me the diamonds for our future husbands and wife's wedding bands when we were 9 or 10. My sister and I tried on all my mom’s and my young brother’s future wife’s jewelry and acted out our favorite princess fairytales. I felt my mother’s love and care every time I put them on because to me they represented her planning for my future life and happiness. My mother also had jeweler friends who made my own design pieces. It was such a wonderful feeling to see and wear my own designs. However it wasn’t until years later when I was introduced to Etsy.

When I look forward, I first think back to the afternoons spent with my sister in my mother’s jewelry box. I aspire to create pieces that mothers can pass down to their children and that will have a story that starts from my hands and continues on through their lives. My goal is timelessness.

I started my second Etsy store with my dear friend Mayumi, my classmate from Parsons Design School, to create more whimsical and fun items to explore another way of making jewelry. I have so many new ideas that I have to work extra hard to post them for everyone to see!! I am very excited nonetheless about all these different stores and directions. I hope you enjoy our shops!!

It is not possible nor fair to ask me to pay for your order.

*Unfortunately I cannot refund shipping charges.
After I have received the item/items in the same condition as when they left my possession, I will gladly send your refund or balance back to you.

Additional policies and FAQs
*RING SIZE:

Please, make sure you give me the correct ring size when placing your order. I would understand slight difference but cannot be responsible for wrong measurement.

Each finger shape is as unique as you so it could be very tricky to get an accurate size.
I highly recommend checking your ring size with SEVERAL local jewelers.
Each finger shape is as unique as you so it could be very tricky to get an accurate size.
Unfortunately, ring size measuring tools are not universal. Therefore, it is safe to get the size from several jewelers to get the most accurate size.

VERY IMPORTANT!
I will add an appropriate amount of room to the band, depending on its width, for your comfort. Therefore, I only need the TRUE ring size which was measured by a thin ring sizer. If your jeweler measured your ring size with a wider band sizer, than please, mentioned that when you place your order.
I usually add 1/4 size to over 4mm-6mm bands, over 6mm-8mm 1/2 size and over 8mm, I add 3/4- to a full size.. As I mentioned earlier, each finger shapes are unique, these general extra room won't work for

If you don't know your ring size and cannot visit a local jeweler, then I can provide you a ring sizer for purchase at a small cost with free shipping. If you order the rings (over $75) from my store, I will fully refund your payment as my service.
It is not the most accurate measuring tool but it is the next best way to measure your ring size and it has been working very well for my customers. Again, I cant be responsible for wrong measurement. Please, make sure to try a few methods other than just this ring sizer if you are not certain. Google can help:)

*RE-SIZING:

Plain/hammer textured bands I make can be resized. This can be possible only when there is size difference in decimals like from 6 to 6.5 and so not like from 6 to 8. Increasing the size requires work on the shank which will lead to a slightly thinner shank. Please, note that the most gemstone rings cannot be re-sized and have to be made completely new.

I will re-size rings I made (excluding the stone set rings) For most of the rings, I can re-size 1/4 or 1/2 size up or down for free (except the gemstone rings and a few patterned rings) with only shipping fee.

If the ring has to be re-sized up or down to full size or more or after the fist re-sizing service, there will be a fee of $20-$36 for silver bands and $32-$60 for gold depending on the labor it is involved with the job. Re-sizing could take as much time as making a new ring if it does;t take longer. Please, contact me for consultation.

*RE-OXIDIZING YOUR SILVER RINGS:

Here is the ring re-oxidizing DIY step-by-step instructions,

Regarding re-oxidizing your rings, I recommend using the "boiled egg method". Even though this is rather a slower method but it is the safest for the ring, you and the environment.

1. Using dish soap clean the ring you want to oxidize: no grease, sweat nor residue of any kind on the ring
2. While your eggs are boiling put your silver pieces in a freezer zip-lock bag.
3. Take your boiled eggs out, let them cool for a few minutes and put them in the bag with shells on.
4.Take a spoon and crack the eggshell, then just mash up the eggs by laying the bag on it's side and place a towel over it (the eggs are hot inside) and mash the eggs up, as if you were making cracker crumbs.
5. Place the ring in the bag. When the eggs are warm the oxidation starts immediately.
6. Roll the bag and let it sit for a few minutes, check, re-roll if needed. It may take a while to achieve the black tone.
7. Once you think you reach the color you want, rinse the ring with mild soap.
8. If you want to achieve a brushed worn look for hammered silver band, use a small piece of fine steel wool or a new scotchbrite pad to rub lightly in circular motions.
Please, repeat the previous steps if you expose the silver too much and want to have a darker.
9. If you seal the finish, it could last slightly longer. I use "Renaissance Wax". You can purchase from Amazon or most jewelry suppliers.

*Note: if you maintain the original oxidized finish and not too worry about dealing with chemicals then I will recommend the following products. Not the safest way but you will get reliable results.

*MATERIALS GUIDE & CARE INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Gold Filled:
Gold filled is an actual layer of gold pressure bonded to another metal such as brass It is an affordable quality alternative to actual gold. By having 100% more gold than gold plating, gold filled is much more valuable and it does not flake off, rub off or turn colors like gold plating. Most people who can wear gold can wear gold filled without worries of any allergic reaction to the jewelry. Since gold filled items are regulated by the government and I only purchase it from a reputable supplier, I can assure you the quality.
I use "Double clad" gold-filled sheets for my wide bands. "Double clad" gold-filled sheet is produced with 1/2 the thickness of gold on each side.
I do offer brushed finish gold filled items and you can also achieve this finish by using scotchbrite pad, however, if this treatment is repeated, it will shorten the life of the gold layer. Not like Solid gold, I cannot use abrasive tools to clean the seam on gold filled. It will damage the gold layer. Please, expect visible seam lines and slight color variations (slight pink hue)

2. Sterling Silver:
Pure silver, also called fine silver, is relatively soft, very malleable, and easily damaged so it is commonly combined with other metals to produce a more durable product. The most popular of these alloys is sterling silver, which consists of 92.5 percent silver and 7.5 percent copper.

Care:
Wearing your silver jewelry often is the best way to prevent tarnish from building up, or remove your oxidized finish and reveal the silver underneath. To minimize scratches and other damage, store your silver jewelry either in a cloth pouch, ziplock bag or in a separate compartment in your jewelry box. Please, keep away from chemicals, such as skin care products, cosmetics, perfume, hairspray, deodorant, Chlorine (swimming pool, hot tubs, etc.), house cleaning supplies or any abrasives, such as chemicals or toothpaste. Some chemicals can oxidize and/or damage the soldered joints. Clean regularly with mildly water, rinse well and pat dry with a non-scratching cloth. If necessary, polish gently with a jewelry polishing cloth.

3. Argentium Silver:
Argentium silver is a silver alloy which modifies the traditional sterling silver alloy by replacing some of the copper with the metalloid germanium. Argentium silver costs more than usual sterling silver but many appreciate the bright white color that is closer to fine silver(pure silver) and their quality to resist tarnish, everyday scratches and dents than traditional sterling.

Care:
Please, keep away from chemicals, such as skin care products, cosmetics, perfume, hairspray, deodorant, Chlorine (swimming poo, hot tubs, etc.), house cleaning supplies or any abrasives, such as chemicals or toothpaste. Clean regularly with mildly water, rinse well and pat dry with a non-scratching cloth. If necessary, polish gently with a jewelry polishing cloth.
If your jewelry as been exposed to dirt or grime, soak it in lukewarm water with a mild, non-phosphate detergent, such as Dawn dish washing liquid for 30 minutes or until the dirt is loosened. Rinse it and dry it thoroughly with soft cloth.

*FEEDBACK:

If it is not a lot of trouble, please fill out your feedback for me. I want to know how you like the piece which you ordered and it will help me to provide a better service. But No Pressure! I know it is not for everybody:)
Thank you in advance!
