I am a gallery represented, award winning artist, living in the San Francisco Bay Area. I paint in oil every day, almost exclusively with palette and painting knives, which gives my art distinct texture, and a beautiful sense of movement. New Zealand born and bred, I have spent the majority of my adult life living in the USA. I draw on my heritage, my soul, and my love for the diversity of the USA landscape for my paintings. Occasionally I throw in a quaint shop front in Provence, or a villa in Tuscany, because I have traveled there, and I love Europe. Either way painting consumes me! Palette Knife Art; Original Oil Paintings by Award Winning San Francisco Bay Artist Lisa Elley
My story starts on a little farm in New Zealand, surrounded by rolling green hills, a menagerie of animals, and countless hours of sketching. As the youngest of four, and living on one modest income, toys were minimal, and my Mom was masterful at scratching out a living, growing our food, and making our clothing, which instilled a wonderful ingenuity in me.
Due to a deep love of travel, and a passion for experiencing new things, I have lived in London and New York, met my husband (who is South African) in Thailand in 1999 and after 15 years living in Florida, we are now living in the San Francisco Bay Area, which is alive with artistic inspiration.
My passion for palette knife painting is greatly influenced by my surroundings. One of the most wonderful things about being an artist is the visual perspective it gives you on everyday things. I can often be spotted hanging out my car window at the lights trying to capture a photo of a random scattering of wildflowers that grow so prolifically here in California, despite the drought. When I go for an evening walk I'm often looking up at the dappled light filtering through the tree canopy, contemplating how to capture the form with my knives. I like to people watch, wishing they would stay still, so I can sketch them. I'm that person grovelling on the ground with my camera, as I'm a big fan of flowers in the foreground of my paintings. Although I love to paint 'Plein Air', the reality of busy modern life lends more towards being alert to paintable moments, photographing them, and painting them later in the studio, when my two girls are at school, and I can focus.

Frequently asked questions
Gift wrapping and packaging
Yes, I offer gift wrapping. I use plain brown archival wrapping paper, with raffia and a 'Best Wishes' hang tag. For Christmas I use festive holly wrap with raffia and a hang tag.
Custom and personalized orders
I can usually paint anything you see in my shop either larger, or smaller. Please convo me to inquire about scaling your painting up or down.
I paint many commissions of landscapes, houses, weddings, vacations, pets, and memories. I have individual listings for these. If you can't find the listing (I have a lot of listings in my shop) please convo me and I will direct you to the right one.
Sizing details
I paint many different sizes. Canvasses come in standard sizes, most of which I can accommodate. Let me know if you have a specific size in mind.
Care instructions
Your oil painting should be displayed in a temperate environment, and not under glass. You can dust it gently with a clean swiffer or microfiber cloth.
