About

Articulation Without Words

The definition of “panoply” is an impressive collection, array, or display. Pronounced the same, panoplei is an assembly of various styles of art by me, J. Travis Duncan.

As a lifelong artist, I have continued to hone my skill in various art media: acrylic, watercolor, pen & ink, mixed media, and occasionally digital as well. In some form or fashion, I paint or draw on a daily basis. Even in the more loose art of sketching I find a way to express my thoughts or how my heart is feeling at the moment. If it is to capture what my eyes have gravitated to, I still find the process liberating and it nourishes my creative side. I firmly believe that there are no mistakes in art, for whatever the artist brings forth is a way to articulate what he or she may have a hard time saying with mere words.

As a visual artist, I like to produce kaleidoscopic paintings and illustrations. I don’t really lean towards one favorite color or hue, but rather I delight in the broad spectrum in which God has painted this planet we live on and the mysteries that He has hung across the universe. Often, I like how brushes can put details onto various painting surfaces. It lends itself well to a more traditional look and feel. However, I thoroughly enjoy using palette knives to produce art of a more rough, and sometimes contemporary, nature. No matter the subject matter, I delight in painting and illustrating. I’m not one to shy away from new styles or even trying my hand at old styles from art movements of long ago. I love impressionism, post impressionism, fauvism, expressionism, and the list goes on and on. As G.K. Chesterton said, “Art is born when the temporary touches the eternal.”

Though I have been creating art for most of my life, I was encouraged by friends, family, and even strangers to take a step forward into the public eye as an artist. Though my exposure has been within the past year, I found early confirmation locally by winning an annual cover art contest for The Augusta Chronicle's Applause Annual Art Preview (picture found in Shop Photos).
