"...Take this kiss upon the brow
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream…"

About

Fabric Fairytales and Art Dolls

With my textile art , my dolls and illustration I enjoy telling tales of magical creatures roaming misty woodlands, skies and oceans.
Telling tales, often made up myself, is the breath to my work, be it with discarded fabrics, paint, words...
However quite recently my dolls and textile art took the main stage and are now my favorite medium in which to express myself and share my dreamy, otherworldly fairytale inspired tales, often with a touch of the spooky and macabre...

I vividly remember making my first doll when I was only a small child,
a sock filled with cotton wool on which I carefully painted a face and hair.
With some cloth and ribbon I made the ‘sock doll’ a little dress.

“Pantovola” was born in the spring of 2015.
I had graduated from art school 10 years prior and explored working as a singer performer, illustrator and print maker. After traveling around for years between jobs and countries, I moved onto a canal boat in London.

The boat was small and winter had thrown her dark cloak over us. Studio space was not available within my budget, so I had to think small and simple again, in order to create work.
One evening, sipping some wine by a roaring wood burner, I had a vivid memory of my childhood, creating my own world and creatures with only a sock and some scraps of fabric. Something magical sparked inside of me and that is where Pantovola began.
Some years have now past, I moved from the south to the north and have been sewing pretty much non stop, from my home studio in Edinburgh.

I create ooak art dolls, folk dolls, textile art and mixed media sculptures,
using cloth, clay, vintage & antique textiles and trinkets from bygone days.
Unearthly creatures tell their tales of myth and magic, they invite us into their private world,
to share with them in wonder.

I love dreaming of all things hidden and secret, things that roam the woods at dusk.
My art is inspired by Witches, Folklore, Fairy tales, Ghost Stories, Mythology, the Spiritual World and the Natural World..
All those things that exist behind the veil of our imagination.
I prefer to work with old materials,
incorporating its own history and narrative into my work.
I like the textures of old cloth and textile, worn in places, ruffled on the edges, there is something quite delightful about the imperfections.

Besides my autonomous work, I create bespoke, personalized Heirloom Dolls and Memorial Art, taking inspiration from the Mourning Art of the Victorian Era and ancient folklore concerning Death and the After Life
I like to think of it as a weave of peoples narratives and history, telling a bigger story together.
For these particular pieces I work with materials provided by the client that are of personal importance;
scraps of fabric, an old wedding glove, family jewels, photographs, letters and so on.
Hopefully my heirloom pieces will be passed on from one generation to the next,
becoming tangible memories in and of people’s lives.

Care instructions

My art dolls are not intended to be toys and should be handled with care.
Keep them away from water and direct sunlight as much as possible.
Pieces can be carefully dusted with a dry clean cloth.
Due to small parts they are not suitable for young children.
Textiles can get damaged by moth infestation, keep your house moth free.
If you think your art piece may have been in touch with moths,
I advice you to wrap the piece in a clean cloth and freeze it for 2/3 days.
Then remove from freezer for a day and repeat.

My dolls come gift wrapped in white tissue and customized satin ribbon. Packaged in bubble wrap and shipped in a postal box.
