Our Story

"In 2017, I started Paper & Pear, first as a blog and shortly thereafter as an Etsy shop. I was originally inspired to create a clean, simple collection of spice labels out of my own need to better organize my kitchen. My husband Josh and I both love to cook and started buying our spices in bulk at the local food co-op. Trying to reduce packaging waste and the environmental impact of what we ate was an important driver that led us to use refillable containers for our spices and pantry staples. I searched the internet for labels to organize our refillable jars, but couldn't find anything that combined the function and clean aesthetic I was looking for. As a designer myself, I decided to make my own. After receiving a lot of positive feedback on my spice jar labels shown in my blog posts of recipes I was making, as well as the labels I'd made for the homemade personal care products that I was selling on Etsy at the time, I transitioned from making labels for my products, to making labels as my product. In 2020, the time was right to expand beyond solo work. We are now thrilled to run a growing family business with the help of my sister, Mary, and my brothers-in-law, Jared and Joe. We work together from our home office in Minnesota, where we design, print, and package every order by hand. I'm thrilled that our labels have helped thousands of people around the world make their homes and pantries a bit more beautiful."

Frequently asked questions
How do I customize individual spice and pantry labels?

Please send the names of the items you would like labeled as a typed list via the personalization box on the listing, in Etsy messenger, or by sending an attachment to:
customercare @ paperandpear . com.

All lines of text can be customized. For example:
No. 12, Cinnamon, Ground Spice, All Natural
No. 51, Bread Flour, Whole Grain, Organic

If I receive only a list of items, you'll receive labels numbered randomly and with "all natural" as the footer (assuming the style you order has numbers and/or footer text shown in the samples). If you prefer either of those elements left off, please mention that.

If you would like subtitles (ground, herb, sweetener, etc.) please include them in your list as I do not know the details in your pantry.

Do you offer rush orders?

As a small shop with minimal staff, we are not always staffed to accept rush orders. We try our best to accommodate rush requests and review such inquiries on a case-by-case basis. Please contact us prior to placing your order if you would like to discuss rush options.

What size labels do you recommend for spice jars?

For most cylindrical spice jars, I would suggest the 1.8" squares. If your jars have squared sides, I'd suggest 2.25" by 1.25" rectangular labels or 1.25" squares as the 1.8" squares tend to be a bit too wide for standard 4 oz squared jars.

If you're unsure about a size, my best suggestion is to cut a slip of paper to the size you're considering and hold, tape or glue it to your container to see if you like the fit. Labels work best when adhered to a smooth and even flat surface. I do not recommend trying to wrap a small amount of the label around a tight edge or corner. The labels are not stretchy and are not recommended for use on textured, spherical, or convex jars as they likely will not stick down smoothly.

What size labels fit mason jars?

For mason jar lids, the 2" round labels fit inside regular mouth, 2-piece mason jar lids (inside the ring).

For jar fronts, I usually suggest 1.8" squares for jars ranging from half-pint up to quart size. If you want to use labels on mason jar fronts, make sure your jars have adequate space that does not already have a design or words such as "Ball" or "Kerr" etched into the glass, or the labels won't stick down smoothly.

If you're unsure about a size, my best suggestion is to cut a slip of paper to the size you're considering and hold, tape or glue it to your container to see if you like the fit.

How do I change my shipping address?

For security reasons, the shipping address on an order cannot be changed after the order is submitted. If you realize you have placed an order with an incorrect shipping address please contact me as soon as possible via Etsy Messages. Assuming the order has not yet been shipped, I can cancel the order and you can reorder with the correct address.

I am not responsible for costs or delays incurred due to an incorrect address being placed on an order.

Do you proofread or spell check custom orders?

I do not run spell check or alter spellings when creating custom orders. I populate custom labels by copying the exact text included with the order. Due to many personal, regional, or brand-specific spelling variations, what may seem like an "obvious" typo to one person, is actually an intended spelling variation or stylistic play on words to someone else.

If I happen to notice something that seems very out of place, I may choose to message a customer for clarification at my discretion; however, customers are ultimately responsible for proofreading the text on custom order submissions prior to ordering. If you notice a mistake after submitting an order, please message me as soon as possible.

Can you add my logo or other artwork to a custom order?

I can usually add logos, but it does depend on the specific colors and level of detail in the logo. I typically only print in black or white and review requests for color printing on a case-by-case basis to ensure I have the appropriate equipment to offer you a high-quality product. Please send me a copy of your logo in order to determine whether I can print it. Any artwork I print that is not my own must be properly licensed. Customers are responsible for verifying they have the appropriate rights to print or reproduce any works they include with custom orders. I generally do not print sports logos, cartoon characters, brand imagery, or other licensed content.

Setup fees or minimum orders may apply to orders containing custom artwork.

What items are are included in the standard packages?

The list of items included in each package is outlined on the listing page under the Item Details for the respective package (spices, pantry items, soap, etc.) This is located on the side (desktop) or bottom (mobile) of each listing where it says "Learn more about this item". Sometimes you have to scroll down a bit past other information from Etsy to find it and then expand the details. Sorry, that this can be a little hard to get to; unfortunately I can't change the way these pages are arranged.
