Paper and Plow: Tiny kitchen, obsession with soap.
Welcome to Paper and Plow!
Paper and Plow started a few years ago after I realized I loved making soap a little too much (if that's even possible). It began in my tiny apartment in Sandy Spring, Maryland and moved right along with me to my tiny apartment in Brooklyn, New York. Notice a theme? Strangely, I love living in small spaces.
Side note: Working in small spaces can really get the creative juices flowing since you are problem solving right from the beginning: Where do I store all of my ingredients, tools and equipment, molds, shipping materials, and labeling supplies? (Let alone my sewing machine, fabric, yarn, and knitting supplies.) How do I keep from completely taking over the apartment and leaving a postage-stamp-sized-drawer for my husband and I to keep our clothes? (The answer to most of these questions is to get creative and use what I have as soon as I can!)
But anyway, after experimenting with batch after batch, first perfecting the quality of the soap and then trying out all the different combinations of scents I could think of, I had a LOT of soap. And I just wanted to make more and more! I've always been a person who is constantly making things but this was different. I couldn't (can't?) stop! Add lip balms and the occasional messenger bag and Paper and Plow is born.
I'm very much inspired by things that grow, good soil, people who make things, simple efficient design, and good food. I like to make useful things that are also fun and made with quality materials and ingredients.
I'm a farmer by day, so I think a lot about what I eat and put on my skin. In the soaps and lip balms, I'm careful to use high-quality ingredients that are all natural, almost always edible, and organic and fair trade when possible. All scents come from the best quality essential oils. I want the ingredients I use to be simple but exciting - and also pronounce-able.
Thanks for visiting Paper and Plow!
