About Paperiaarre and the things that become treasures

Hello! My name is Kaija. I'm a bookbinder, an artist, a maker, a writer.

My brand Paperiaarre is about finding the things you feel are right for you. I make books and art for individuals looking for treasures to fill their daily life, hence the name, which is Finnish for paper treasure.

I believe this time we’re living in is the time of uniqueness. By this I don’t necessarily mean that everyone wants to stand out from the crowd, but that people have (hopefully) recognized their worth as their own person, as an original and special human being. I’m hoping to create one of a kind books, art and jewelry that support that feeling of self worth and uniqueness. Journalling, in any form you choose, is a practice that heals your soul, clarifies your personal goals and helps you achieve them. I think having a great book to work with can only help the process, don’t you?

I love making books for other creative people, because it gives me a chance to imagine what great things are written, drawn, imprinted onto the pages of these simple little books I make. I like to think of my books as vessels of potential which are made to be aligned with your creative potential, which is massive, I'm sure.

As a master bookbinder I, obviously, know a lot about books. Out of all the different types of techniques and materials I’ve learned and tried along the years, I’ve chosen to use the ones I believe are the best. And by the best I mean the most practical, most durable, and most beautiful. From the very start of my career as a bookbinder I’ve considered a superb quality the most important feature of my work. Once you’ve tried a good handbound notebook, you’ll never want to go back to machine made bulk notebooks. It really is a pleasure to write or draw in a nice-looking book that works with you, not against you, by staying open when and where you want it to.

My second love in addition to bookbinding is mixed media art. I adore vintage photos and other old materials; I find it exhilirating to use them to make something entirely new and beautiful. I create collage boxes, tiny and slightly less tiny, as well as jewelry that is both approachable and affordable. These pieces of art are treasures for your home and your body – they have grasped a fleeting moment in time you can recognize and cherish as your own.

I've graduated as a master bookbinder from Tyrvää School of Art and Design in 2006. In addition to years of bookbinding studies, I have also studied English Philology and Art. I'm fascinated by science, linguistics, and all sorts of random facts in a geeky kind of way. I'm a huge fan of most things old and beautiful. I seek solace in beauty. I have a restless brain.

To me, making things by hand and sharing them here with you, is also a way of communication I can truly enjoy. I've got Asperger syndrome, an autism spectrum disorder, which in my case represents itself as problems in face-to-face communication and as my endless will to reach perfection in all the things I set my mind to, so it's far from being all bad! Paperiaarre is where all my strengths come together and result in impeccable products that are guaranteed to be unique!

If you want to find out more about me, my books and my art, visit me at! Or if you're feeling sociable, you can always drop me a convo!

Frequently asked questions

Custom and personalized orders

I don’t currently make any custom order books, and it’s not really something I expect to change any time in the near future. My Aspergers has the most effect on my time and stress management skills (and sadly I find all sorts of negotiation extremely stressfull, even if it’s with nice people about nice matters), and I’ve simply found it’s best for my health to work at my own pace. This way I can always guarantee the high quality of my work I hold so important. Nothing is designed or finished in a rush, so you can trust you’re always getting the best product possible.

Gift wrapping and packaging

Free gift wrapping!

Your order will always arrive gift wrapped in a nice, minimalistic manner, all ready for gifting, or for treating yourself to something special. I also include in my orders a mini bio, as well as a small info about the history of Coptic bindings if your order includes one.

If your order is a gift to someone, I'm happy to include a small note from you to the recipient at no extra cost! Just leave me a message about it during checkout, and I'll take care of it.
