About

How Wanting To Be Indiana Jones Led To This

People ask me all the time what inspired me to create Paper Towns Vintage. It's honestly a bit of a long and winding tale, as most good stories are.

When I was much younger and the more impractical career paths of Giraffe Doctor and FBI Criminal Profiler had been crossed of my "when I grow up list" due to impracticality, naturally I decided on the most realistic career of all. I decided I would be Indiana Jones. Well, an archaeologist. A super adventure-y one.

I loved the History Channel, had taken Latin in high school, was genuinely interested in ancient Roman History, and obviously would be up for protecting the world from the various evil groups that wanted to steal the treasures that belonged in museums. I was so into it that I went to college and MAJORED in Latin translation. That's dedication.

But then late in my college tenure I realized something. It turns out (and I would have known this if I'd paid more attention to the classroom scenes in the movies) that archaeology is 99.9% academia and .1% adventure and bad guy hunting. Archaeology was out. I graduated from college. Then the economy collapsed.

During this time I was very humbled and took a job as an intern at a customs brokerage firm. My job was processing commercial invoices from companies that imported their goods from overseas. Basically - this shows what they pay their factories to produce goods that they then sell here. I noticed that one of my accounts, a luxury perfume brand that shall remain nameless, was importing their bottles of perfume for $5 and selling them for $135. Holy markup batman. Not only was that revealing on an economic level, but it made perfume seem somehow more accessible.

You know how earlier I said I wanted to fight the bad guys for the artifacts? Well let me interject that I don't consider myself someone who would be tough, or even a tomboy. I'm a girly girl to the core. I love cosmetics. I love perfume. The experience of seeing that invoice made me feel like perfume was something that I could make. That's when my first company, Poison Apple Apothecary was born.

Some of you may actually know Poison Apple Apothecary. We had a good run on etsy from 2007-2012 when I was able to sell the company to concentrate on Paper Towns. But how did all this lead to this store with the map jewelry?

One thing I noticed when we started selling our perfume was that our scents with place names in the title would outsell everything else. We had one particular scent, Ghost of the Knoxville Girl, that would sell out at every show. We couldn't keep it in stock. And it was a floral - typically the least popular genre of scent.

At one particular show a gentleman bought out our entire stock of that scent without even cracking the bottle to sniff it. When I asked him about it he said, "My family is from Knoxville and I never know what to buy the women, but they will all love this since it says Knoxville on the label. It's like a piece of home."

THAT. WAS. THE. IDEA. MOMENT.

That's where Paper Towns was born. The guy let me know that there was a need for gifts to remind people of home. This was now a holy mission of sorts. I had to figure out how to fill this need.

I'd always been interested in jewelry, but had trouble landing on a concept that I felt was truly unique. But guess what I had a ton of at home? Yep. Old vintage maps that I had collected from various places over the years. Armed with my maps, idea, and an indefatigable fervor I taught myself to make jewelry and Paper Towns Vintage was born in 2012. I sold my perfume company and never looked back.

As of 2018, Paper Towns Pendants have been sold in over 3000 stores across the US and Canada. Our best sellers? Custom designs for small towns that don't get a lot of love. The ones you can't find splayed across coffee mugs and airbrushed shirts. The little guys. Those are the orders I love the most.

I am incredibly grateful to everyone that has helped us on this path. Who knew that a young girl with a dream of being a swashbuckling archaeologist would grow up to be a curator in her own special, unique way.

❤️ Angela
