When creating my hospitality beads, I often use the eastern oyster shell. I developed an affinity for this humble shell in Beaufort, SC. Living in the lowcountry, I had the honor of getting to know many descendants of the Gullah people. They taught me much about the history of the sea islands including the “haint blue” color that I’ve discussed here before.
Oysters provided the coastal people with abundance from the sea and their shells are plentiful in the lowcountry even being used in the “tabby” foundations that have survived for hundreds of years. The lowly oyster with its rugged outer shell and inner luminous beauty are special to me and I hope they will be special to you, too.
